Was at a ‘Friendsgiving’ and a guy was talking about the Tesla Model 2 being an entry-level Tesla that would rival the Toyota Camry pricewise. But I don’t see why Tesla would cut into their Model 3’s sales like that. Plus the model 3 is fairly cheap nowadays with price cuts

What I would love to see is a small hatchback without all the “self driving” features, with a basic cloth interior, without an unnecessary amount of power, and with a reasonable amount of range (at least 250 miles). I’m sure the car reviewers would hate it, but if they can make that for $25k, it will sell millions of vehicles.

I believe Tesla COULD be the one to make this with the Model 2, but I fear Elon will have a hard time making a car without all the technology. I thought it would be Toyota, but I didn’t see it happening after the BZ4X POS disaster.

A new lower cost compact Tesla has been “planned” for some years now. There have been comments saying it won’t be called “Model 2”

It is likely to be a Corolla class vehicle, not Camry. Pricing is claimed to be around $25,000 before incentives. The big thing that most people seem to miss is that it will likely be a higher margin vehicle than most people expect for that class. I don’t understand why people think it will hurt Model 3 sales. Corollas sell well, but Toyota still sells plenty of Rav 4s.

It has been delayed up to now because 1. The COVID mess and all the supply chain woes that kicked off, and 2. the slow development of the 4680 cells which Tesla found to be more of a challenge than they thought. It is now starting to ramp up, but the Cybertruck has priority. My feeling is once it is proven, they can duplicate new lines much faster and for less money than other designs.

I really hope they make a small hatchback. My wife drives a model 3, and it is bigger than I like when I go into DC, particularly the older parts of town. My car is coming up on 20 years old, and I will definitely be getting a small car when I replace it. If Model 2/Q is a small hatchback, it will likely be the choice. If it’s a crossover or not available in US, I will be buying something else.

Tesla have said they are working on a cheaper next generation car.

Any details about that car are so far unconfirmed. Including when or where it will be made.

Since we haven’t seen any prototypes or progress on production lines it is probably still at least two years from release at this point.

Rumors of an imminent launch of one are not legit. Seems to be vaporware; may get the parts bin special quick release which would still be at least 2 years and would require heavily recycling components from the Model 3.

There really isn’t that much room in the margins to go all that cheaper than Model 3. They can go with a smaller battery, and a cheaper/smaller motor. Have to design a new likely smaller platform at that point, or use the rapidly aging Model 3 platform to avoid R&D and engineering costs. Could go cloth and even cheaper materials for the interior; smaller screen, no sensors or cameras for autopilot. Does that get them to $15K cheaper to make than a Model 3? I dunno, that’s a tough ask.

If they’d spent the last 5 years trying instead of working on CT, company would be much better off.

      Seems to be vaporware

They were just about to break ground on a Mexico factory specifically to produce it, before the Mexican government fucked them over. What the fuck are you talking about?

Model 3 is a rapidly aging platform

The heck are you even talking about? It’s the most competitive EV on the market. Just got refreshed with Highland.

If they’d spent the last 5 years trying instead of working on CT, company would be much better off.

Small minds think in small scales. It’s not an ‘A or B’ approach–Tesla is such a massive company they can work on both, simultaneously.

Or if you paid attention to their investor day you’d see it’s a completely different way of building the car as well as much cheaper next generation parts.

It’s literally the opposite of just using the Model 3 parts bin as you’re suggesting.

Rapidly aging Model 3 platform? What? That platform is crazy good, think what you want about Tesla but that car has so many efficient technologies in place that all other manufacturers have yet to catch up to even now.

It’s a 6 year old platform. We make fun of the charger for being on a 20 year old platform you really want Model 3 to follow that approach? 6-10 years is a pretty normal cycle. Most manufacturers have more then 2 or 3 vehicle platforms. The platform is admirably light but that’s really the main advantage over competitors, whose platforms are typically stiffer.

It’s also a large platform for a theoretically $15K cheaper car. Why use a midsize platform for a entry level spec car? FWD might make sense, for instance, since half the US market lives where they get adverse weather at least a couple times a year. Requiring AWD for traction will defeat entire purpose of a cheap car if it’s locked behind a $7500 increase to the price.

You guys need some new talking points to reflect the fact the rest of the world has caught up. Nobody is impressed anymore by what Tesla released 6 years ago. Nobody believes things are coming “next quarter!” After being lied to repeatedly. Cybertruck appears to be on a modified Y platform instead of being a sealed exoskeleton that can float. Semi range is laughable and Pepsi drivers hate them.

Imagine all the resources they threw at the CT going to this.

The Dodge seems like a better comp to me personally, since both are 4 door sedans. Teslas are kinda muscle sedans if you think about it. Fast as heck in a straight line but even M3 performance isn’t really something you’d take canyon carving.

Modified was key word there but I’ll accept that’s a bit of a stretch on my part. The rear gigacasting shares a lot of design elements and much of the basic geometry on its lower end with the Model Y rear subframe. The casting itself is much larger & has a lot of structural reinforcement that’s completely unnecessary on the Y.

From the leaked photos it looks to be a very car like suspension design.

I half wonder if changing course and lowering it, losing the air ride suspension and just marketing it as a ute would be a bigger winner. It seems like it might actually do well as a sportier car like vehicle. Could still keep the high tow and haul ratings. Prob look pretty cool slammed on some 18s with thin rubber and would put any 60s El Camino or 2000s Aussie ute to shame on a drag strip.

Definitely more than rumor as Tesla puts it in their presentations as part of their plan. I’m thinking smaller battery and smaller car, but also maybe less sensors for auto drive features. Obviously going to be called 2 because it won’t be as good as 3 and the lineup will then be 2 S3XY. 3 could be improved and increase in price from where it is now (we don’t know what Highlander 3 will price at in the US) and 2 could have that $15k gap. Might still be five years out though. Actually probably still five years out with the CT issues taking up time.

Yes, it’s absolutely not a rumor. It’s coming soon and it’s going to be game changing.

Here’s a picture taken with an early prototype that was recently unveiled in Musk’s biography https://electrek.co/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2023/09/Screenshot-2023-09-12-at-7.42.04-PM.jpg

So far here’s what we know about it: The lowest trim of this model will be ~$25,000 It will probably be a hatchback (see image) It’s being built on a new vehicle architecture where the components are ~90% fully designed and (mostly) built by Tesla It will be built in Austin Texas first, then later at a new factory being built in Mexico.

Likely Speculation: Versions of this car will likely be built at their other factories around the world. A version of the car will be sold without a steering wheel and will be called the “robotaxi”

Calling that thing a “gamechanger” is completely delusional. Even at a $25,000 price point there is already enough competition in the market.

And given Tesla’s fading positive brand recogition thanks to their narcissistic CEO and their quality issues even neglecting competition from China you have several $25,000 cars in the market already.

Who cares? Smart has been there for years, Dacia offers the Spring, Renault will release the Twingo next year. If VW wasn’t that stubborn they may offer a revised e-Up/Mii/Citigo.

And apart from Dacia all these cars offer better quality than a Model 3 if we take the infamous TÜV results into account. So who really wants a Tesla Model 2?

They’re all selling well. MG4 is the 9. most sold compact in Europe. With your argument, you’re basically saying that Model S and Model X are crappy cars because nobody buys them anymore.

Sudden battery failures in an Toyota are rare. People in Tesla forums talk about HV battery replacements as if it were something common and benign – like having the xenon bulbs replaced.

Making a high-quality EV is expensive. Making an EV that rusts, has peeling paint, has uneven gaps, can’t handle mud puddles and needs to replace the battery twice in ten years is not expensive. The batteries are given a cheap overhaul after failure, before being sold for 20K.

The Cybertruck will be delivered in a whopping ten cars to customers this November. The Model S and X are hardly selling these days, and Tesla haven’t even announced a successor to the former, even though it’s 11 years old.

If the Model 2 was anything more than a rumor to pump stocks, we would have seen the concept car before Covid-19.

10 will be delivered at the event. Just like every other delivery event Tesla has done. Customer deliveries will begin just like the Model 3 as of the first of December.

Not sure if you’ve noticed, but there’s hundreds of Cybertrucks now. 10 to 15 have been coming out of the factory per day. They’re already past VIN# 1000.

It was supposed to be a $35k vehicle, the model 2 is supposed to be a $25k vehicle, probably lower range (low 200 mile range I’d bet), not as fast, possibly no AWD option. Great for an entry EV for those that are younger or can’t afford more, and don’t need something for long trips.

The low cost vehicle is absolutely in the works, and looks to be 3 years away, for volume production. It will share a common platform with the Robo taxi. It will be built using an unboxed parallel production process. It’s going to be manufactured first in Texas, then Mexico and Berlin. It will be technically advanced, but a utilitarian vehicle. This is all public information. It is speculation, that it may use a sodium ion battery, and may also be made in India.
