Oh noes! Won’t anybody have pity on the poor woman who never had any problem with being married to one of the greatest mass murderers of recent history?
From what I hear, she was no passive beneficiary, making decisions and actively participating in the regime’s crimes.
There’s thousands of people out there with cancer who can’t get the best care, or even adequate care. I hope no one is foolish enough to make her a priority
After reading the article, she is in Russia. I’m sure she will receive the best care moscow has to offer, which is still better than a lot of people.
That’s true. Russia does have really good doctors - if you have money. And you have to be able to withstand yelling and belittling but as a Russian you get used to that.
what was it…138billion dollars that assad transferred to russia on the day he fled? should do.
That’s a perverted amount of money. But yeah that should do.
So it’s not like she is being denied treatment. She is being denied a specific treatment in a specific prestigious clinic in Britain. But honestly, Russians can cure cancer just as well ( - provided you have the money to pay them). Moscow has prestigious clinics and great resources. I’d much rather get treatment there than in some rural British hospital to be honest.
If he had that much money then surely he’d have been able to pay for a military to defend his position in Syria.
The source on that is sketchy at best. Logically it doesn’t make sense.
you surely know how to find a better source. wsj? LOL.
There was a great show about Russian healthcare a while back. Can’t recall the name, but it had Jon Hamm and Harry Potter in it.
A young doctor’s notebook - based on a Russian novel from Michael Bulgakov. I’m so sad they discontinued it 😭 I think about it once a week at least!
But it takes place around WWI, so… Not exactly a 1:1 portrayal of Russian medicine today
A friend of mine is truggling with that. I wouldn’t have thought that Moscow’s health care was so shitty. I was for some reason expecting the opposite.
I’m so sorry to hear that. I hope they find some qualified care soon. Is the problem the access (money, status) or can’t they find proper treatment for other reasons?
How many Blyats does the average Russian medical chart contain?
Do they not have cancer treatment centers in Russia or Iran?
This comment leads me to believe that you haven’t had much ‘up close and personal’ experience with cancer… (Not trying to talk down to you in saying that or anything, btw, though you’re super fortunate if that’s indeed the case.)
Just for reference: during the early 00’s I would get a bill for somewhere around $10k each month for my dad’s chemo infusions alone. This went on for at least 2 - 3 years, if memory serves, which - for those who aren’t keeping score at home - ended up totalling nearly $500k by the time he died.
Obviously, not every treatment is created (or priced) equally, but… I think you can probably see what I’m getting at, anyway
Maybe it’s that or maybe it’s that I was pointing out where Assad’s allies are.
… I am not a clever man.
To be blunt, I struggle to muster absolutely any sympathy for the significant other of an authoritarian dictator.
Oh no, I seem to have misplaced my tiny violin.
holds both British and Syrian citizenship
lol, not anymore. Stateless guest of Russia now.
Oh no…
Anyway
Awe shucks…Kudos to the UK for denying her entry.
Why not accept her, treat her, and try her for her crimes?
Has she actually committed any crimes? Yeah, she’s married to a dictator who did but did she have any actual political power or responsibility herself?
I’ve read that she was personally involved in the brutality. Wikipedia gives some details and sources.
Maybe this is just an oversimplification on my part, but I think of it like this: Say that my INSERT RELEVANT FAMILY MEMBER HERE spends weeks/months/decades of their life
violently oppressing a populationjust beating the absolute shit out of someone(s) in order to gain - or maintain - some sort of benefit. I’m fully aware of this activity, yet still have no problems availing myself of these clearly ill-gotten gains year after year. Have I committed any crimes? Yeah, maybe I was, say, married to a dictator who did, but… How responsible am I?To put it another way: If you saw someone attempting to attack/stab/etc someone else across the street from you, do you feel that you have a moral imperative to call 911 even if you do not personally know either party (having no political power or responsibility, say)?
“All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing…”
Being immoral is not the same as actively doing something illegal.
Says every CEO.
Ok, and…? Do you have a point of some kind here, or are we just going to simplistically cut semantic hairs and call it a day? Cuz if it’s gonna be the latter, I don’t really even understand the point of commenting to begin with since we’re apparently just going to go over vocabulary instead of, say, discussing… oh, I dunno, the actual point?
(The actual point of the conversation - and today’s vocabulary word, coincidentally - is ETHICS. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ )
The point was pretty clear, unless you make being obtuse on the internet a hobby of yours. Small advice: This is not how you get people to discuss with you. On the other hand, it’s a great way to get most people to avoid talking to you at all.

The actual point of the conversation is “Has she actually committed any crimes?”. If you look up the definition of today’s vocabulary word, you’ll find that it has no bearing on the actual point.
Uh who cares? Anyone who wholeheartedly embraced and benefitted from atrocities can go fuck them selfs.
The person who asked the question obviously cares.
It must be wild to be so incapable and/or afraid of thinking for yourself… You people are fucking crazy 🤣
Missing the point does not mean you are thinking for yourself.
I did not ask if she was immoral, but whether she has committed any actual crimes she “could be tried for”.
I wondered this too, but she’s already in Moscow. Any care she can receive there, is still equal to or better than what the average Russian can get.
Why is dying in quotes? She has cancer… she’s kinda dying, not ‘dying’.
It’s in quotes because the headline is quoting a source rather than reporting information that the newspaper has evaluated themselves.
ah, that makes sense. Thanks.
