Its a 50k car though. I’d prefer full EV for less.
PHEV does not make sense for sedans.

Toyota using their current technology to compete in an EV market that they can’t at this time. Hybrid is a patch and in my opinion will eventually dry up. Nice car but $50K + dealer markup is currently in the process of drying up. ManyToyota owners that paid over sticker price will remember the dealer that took advantage of them when it comes time to replace their car.
You can say the HV and PHEV is a patch, but it fills Toyota’s ongoing strategy. They see a slower transition to full EVs that most people on this sub would prefer.
The dealer markup is a separate issue. Toyota corporation doesn’t see anything from the markup at John Smith’s Toyota dealership. Their goal is to produce enough vehicles so that an individual dealer cannot markup a model due to scarcity.
For whatever reason, Toyota hasn’t been able to get the parts they need to build as many Primes as people want to buy (computer chips?).
I think Toyotas mission was to use hydrogen vehicles as their EV. Frankly hydrogen might be a better option than electric if they had succeeded in making it available at the same time. It might still be if it reaches the point that it is widely available. Bob Honda and Toyota missed the mark on EV’s. It’s a shame. I think both make great cars.
Lots of this going on in the comments.
The r/cars thread on the very same news has such a drastic difference in response.
r/cars is just happy that something with an ICE engine won the award.
Because in here, if it’s not an EV, it’s an automatic loser.
“Motor Trend” - this explains the choice
Hybrids: All the complication, maintenance, and expenses of an internal combustion engine AND an electric vehicle, all mashed together like a Frankenstein monster. I’ll pass.
Stop being dramatic, it isn’t even like that.
Wow, how much advertising did Toyota buy this year?
Model Y is the top selling car in the world, but can’t reward folks who do not advertise, so looks like 5 year old technology wins the day
Model Y doesn’t qualify. Motortrend has always required new or major revisions to a vehicle to qualify for car of the year.
I know someone with a 2010 Prius and she just paid a ton to have her regenerative brakes redone. I guess they don’t just use the motor?
And here we are 13 years later with the same overly complex, far too expensive car.
Meanwhile JD Power sucking that Dodge teat…
I’m just here to watch all the BEV elitists get all flustered that an EV didn’t win MotorTrend car of the year and it was a hybrid Prius that did.
Did not know about the solar roof. That’s sick! Fuel efficiency is crazy. I want one now
design wise, toyota nailed it. if only they made a pure ev looking like that… a hybrid drivetrain is a thing of the past
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was told $3k down, 6-8 month wait, $3,700 markup over MSRP. Another dealer (both Seattle area) said $2k down, 1-3 month wait, $5,000 in mandatory paint protection bullshit.
Thanks Toyota
