And this is why even if you absolutely hate the moderate asshats in the Democratic party, you should remain registered and vote in each and every primary.
Congrats to Angie Nixon on fighting the good fight and winning!
If you hate establishment Dems, voting in the primary is so very critical. And more than that, speaking up and volunteering to text people and go door-to-door if you can - provide whatever support you can BEFORE the primary, then vote in the primary.
And then, of course, vote int he general because no matter which one won the primary, establishment Dems still end up doing more for human rights than fascists.
But yeah - those who only complain in the general and worse, don’t bother to vote in the general after not doing anything before either… they are part of the problem.
Caucus. Primary. Vote. I know every state is different, but find your local Democratic party (or DSA or anything you want, really) and show up. You’ll have a lot of influence there because you’ll be one of like 20 people that shows up. And it really matters.
You can influence your local party and that influence puts pressure on the regional parties and so on. We lost a crucial caucus endorsement in my neck of the woods that cost a progressive the primary. And I saw how close the caucus vote was. It really does matter.
But I ain’t in no desert, I don’t know what them cactus things is!
;-)
This is not a trivial win!
she won by a clear margin. Nixon received 56.1% of the vote … ahead of Vindman’s 43.9%.
Congratulations to Angie Nixon. beating Alexander Vindman is quite an accomplishment, he was not a bad candidate for a democrat. Testifying against Trump in 2019 brought him a lot of respect, and he had more campaign money too!
IMO he was a pretty bad candidate. He gave the dems several news cycles of criticizing Trump when he testified before congress so he was kind of gifted this race by the party. He’s as milquetoast as they come and completely unproven as he’s never run for anything else. He would have gotten creamed in the general. We’ll see how a DSA candidate performs in a statewide election in Florida.
I’m not denying that, but he was known for standing up to trump, that can carry you a long way.
I respect his service to the country and his courage. But he wasn’t going to move the needle in Florida. He wasn’t even from there.
I’m glad she won. She had a great team on the ground here in FL doing the work.
This isn’t a surprise, this the new normal emerging from the inhumane conditions of capitalism. People are fed up with having the value of life placed below the value of property, power and wealth.
Capitalists are deluded, distracted and pacified with pretty possessions and their lives have been reduced to mere consumption and the worth of their wealth portfolios. Wealth and property courtesy of those who toil in developing nations, on the backs of workers, in order to support lavish lifestyles of abundant consumption. None of that matters when you die.
The relationships you build with others, the impact you have on your communities and people you interact with, matter far more than how much property and wealth one can amass. The inevitable course of capitalism is the degeneration of civilizations. In the era of techno-capitalism, our communities are falling apart due to isolation and lack of true connections. Without the power to organize and collectively act, via real in-person relationships with emotional investment, we become powerless via lack of true social skills and social anxieties. Internet neurosis.
This is by design and exactly what the techno-capitalists want.
People have been fed up for a long time and looking for change. That’s what helped Obama win in 2008. Alas, the propaganda from the fascists has been pervasive since long before that, so a lot of the people fed up for now decades have been deluded into voting for what continues to make things worse.
It’s not just that a lot of the establishment Dems are not only behind the times but also beholden to corporate money, dragging them right-wing; but also, even shit they DO get done always gets minimized in the media (largely owned by oligarchs who benefit from fascist laws and tax cuts) while the fascists get a lot of passes in the media for those same reasons.
I think there are a number of countries out there showing that properly regulated capitalism is probably the best practical system we have. But it has to be properly regulated. And it is a constant fight. Laws matter little if people ignore them and nobody enforces them. So no matter what system is set in place, there will always be a fight by people to corrupt it.
And the point about social changes is also true. I have my wife, and two real friends. A few acquaintences I chat with every few weeks. A few people I keep up with online but mostly in shared projects, not socially. Much of my family I’ve had to block for political reasons, so I have my dad and one uncle left. My stepmom, but I was an adult when lost mom and dad remarried - she’s really sweet and I adore her but just don’t talk much.
I think something like that - that lack of people - is probably true for most. We used to be forced to deal with our neighbors because most people didn’t move around much, so for a lot of people, you’d spend decades in the same place. With the rise of communications making it easier to keep in touch remotely, it’s definitely radically shifted our social construct.
I think that’s one reason - when people say “all this talk online does nothing” - but this is the last marketplace of ideas we have. This is where we have left to organize. So like-minded people have to find each other somehow, and then hopefully organize on the local, regional, national levels. Because we need to organize to have protests. And protests need to happen until everyone sees there are enough of us that demand change that we can enforce that demand. So it’s like an effort that must be ramped up, and talking online is the critical foundation for that, even though it’s useless until we get there.
finally someone i voted for has won! go get em Angie!
Did our part as well, really cool to see!
Does the US media call every progressive Democrats’ win a “surprise”?
Yes, because they need to maintain the narrative that progressive candidates are ‘fringe’ and only ever win by chance or cheating. That way when the general election comes around, potential progressive voters will be disinclined to vote for the progressive candidate, or they may just not go vote at all, because they have been convinced that the progressive can’t really win.
Something like that. The sometimes mystifying (to me) New York Times effect, which always seems to enable conservatives or, at best, the democrats’ right wing. “We don’t win against republicans because we still aren’t enough like them”
it only surprise to them. we are fed up.
This isn’t US media. It’s UK.
aww shit I should’ve seen that. But my statement still stands. Each time they still act like it’s a surprise that people have had enough in droves.
Yeah, similar article by ABC says “upset”. Then they compare the money that each candidate raised… It wasn’t an upset, people are angry at the mistreatment we’ve been going through. The money in politics is an abomination.
The money in politics is an abomination.
I keep saying it. Legal corruption.
Next we primary Wasserman-Schultz

$975,000 to Vindman’s $16.3m
16:1. I think that tops El Sayed.
fabulous congratulations also to Brandon Dukes a (non commie larper) Democrat that flipped a seat in important swing state Pennsylvania.
real results from real politicians
It doesn’t matter much who won the democratic primary in Florida a republican is going to take that position home.
Gave you an upvote b/c I disagree with downvoting people stating what is likely true. It’s not like you’re being disingenuous, a troll, or anything like that.
That said, I disagree that it doesn’t matter. The only way the Democratic Party will ever go back to being any kind of progressive party is for the voters to defeat centrist primary candidates.
Will she win the general election? Unlikely, but it’s not like her primary victory doesn’t count. It’s a message to the party, even if she loses. Stop nominating centrist Republicans who are fine with LGBTQ & abortion rights. Start nominating people who want to serve & better their communities rather than enrich themselves. People are fed up, and they’re starting to do something about that. On the national scale, it starts with primary victories.
As more voters see people like Mamdani actually doing good things for regular people (and of course not imposing Sharia law like all the right wing talking heads “predicted”), the more democratic socialism will lose the taint it’s been given by both major parties.
Gave you an upvote b/c I disagree with downvoting people stating what is likely true.
Thank you for this and I did the same. It’s frustrating seeing Lemmy downvote emotionally - happens in a lot of threads.
And I only use the collective like that because it’s just a common behaviour. Not everyone does it, for sure.
But it happens. There was one annoying day a week or two ago where I piped up in mulitple threads because there was a lot of emotionally-satisfying but factually-wrong information. And I was just like “I know everyone hates [thing], but look, you gotta bear in mind [information usually with sources]” and was getting downvoted to oblivion. I understand, we all hate stuff and we get these notions about things that are wrong and popularly so - I’m not immune! I know I support some stupid stuff, although I try to keep an open mind and change with new info - but I’m still sure there are things I will downvote people for presenting stupid opinions and they’re right and I’m wrong… So the point is that I get it why people downvote like that… but it’s still super frustrating to be on the other side of it, being a lightning rod for peoples’ frustration with the topic just because you’re presenting information that goes slightly or partly against the emotions. lol
It sounds like you might prefer an instance that has downvotes disabled (like mine). It’s a breath of fresh air.
Oh hell naw, hitting that downvote on actuall asshats is what I live for. ;-)
Fair enough! I was on the fence for the same reason, but then I just tried it and liked it much more. Personally, it helped my mental health a bit. That’s not to say it would do the same for you, it’s all personal preference!
Honestly it’s a message to the people to ALWAYS go vote. You want anything to change it starts with the people themselves not being lazy and avoiding their civic duty.
I mean maybe. Or maybe for 2 decades capitol D Democrats have given Florida voters nothing to vote for, so they haven’t shown up.
Politics doesn’t actually occur along a left right spectrum. Trumps at negative a shit ton with almost all demographics. By November the ball of string will be fully cooked.
As long as its centrists/ incumbents/ “thirdway” types losing, then there is actually a chance in November.
Florida used to be purple not that long ago. I’m not exactly hopeful but, at the very least, I expect her to do well enough to scare the shit out of both Republicans and Democrats.
Het slogan should be:
I’m not a crook
The reference would fly over the heads of Gen Z.
