On a separate note the Colorado shooter was radicalized by right-wing extremist white supremacists.

They’re not going to. One of the bedrock principles is that it’s never the leader’s fault. Hence the endless cycle of suddenly discovering that some particular person is horrible, just the worst, and we tried to give him a chance but we have to get rid of him now, all the blame is on him, and welcome to our new genius who will do great things.

Honestly, he wasn’t even BSing. He just wasn’t bothering to validate information to the degree he should before issuing statements.

That’s not great by normal standards, but by Trump administration messaging standards, I’d say that this is probably above average.

Compare this to the stuff that Trump puts out on either social media or on the White House website.

In fairness to Patel (which is a phrase I NEVER thought I’d type!) I thought the phrasing he used was that a “person of interest” was “in custody”, which was technically true at the time?

Apparently, no, it was a tweet, so fuck that guy:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/11/us/politics/fbi-patel-kirk-shooting.html

"On Wednesday evening, as word of Mr. Kirk’s killing reverberated around the nation, Mr. Patel, a former podcaster, posted welcome but fleeting news on his official X account.

“The subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody,” he wrote to his 1.8 million followers. “Thank you to the local and state authorities in Utah for your partnership with @fbi.”

Mr. Patel wrote the message after speaking with agents working the case, and quickly posted it himself without consulting his leadership team, according to two people with knowledge of his actions."

Which is why I always say, in the early hours on events like this, don’t really believe ANYTHING without confirmation.

“We need to be very clear, you are not going to get gun deaths to zero,” he said. “It will not happen. You can significantly reduce them, by having more fathers in the home, by having more armed guards in front of schools. We should have a honest and clear reductionist view of gun violence, but we should not have a utopian one.”

It’s weird, I never had any armed guards in front of my schools and yet we never had any school shootings at my schools. Odd that.

We did have one lockdown because there was a loose javelina running around, but that’s an entirely different can of worms.
