If the croutons hurt, you’re doing it wrong.
The problem is that store bought croutons have normalized being dry, hard bullets. It’s not like that when they’re made fresh. They’re beautiful little pieces of buttered texture in your salad.

Get a toaster oven air fryer, not as good as being an air fryer but we make dinner in that thing almost daily
It also makes amazing tofu. 20 min at 400 gives it an actual texture. No pressing or freezing required.
Air fryer is also great to make a quick garlic bread.
Get a spray bottle or just coat your hand in water. Get a plate of croutons lightly moist. Then, just microwave it for about 30 seconds.

Store bought croutons are shelf stable bread. Go read any travel diary from the 1800’s. It’s never been good. Real croutons are not shelf stable and do not cut your mouth.

We don’t need croutons for salads to hurt us - having to eat unprocessed vegetables already makes me cry.
Just drench that shit in salty/vinegary oil, let it sit there for a few mins, enjoy your pre-digested salad and get fat with vegetables in the process.
