For months now I’ve been torn between buying a Model Y and buying one of Hyundai’s Ioniq models. Today I pulled the trigger and bought my first EV, an Ioniq 6 SEL. Overall I just felt like I was getting more car for the same price. I’m absolutely blown away at how much Hyundai has turned their brand around compared to 5 years ago. The 5 year 60k mile bumper to bumper and the 10/100k battery with two years free charging and 3 years free maintenance is what ultimately sold me. But dang if those Tesla seats aren’t the most comfortable things in the world.
Good choice.
For everyone going on about the supercharger network, remember it’s been opened up to other manufacturers, so everyone will be using you superchargers now.
You’ll love it, the E-GMP platform is awesome.
If it was awesome, they would not be replacing it so soon.
It sounds like the new IAM platform may support true OTA which is a big negative for the E-GMP platform.
Anything to justify buying a rattle box, eh?
Here are all the TSB’s for the Ioniq 6. For such a new car it has a lot of problems. Unfortuantely, without OTA updates, you need to go into the dealer to get them fixed.
You chose what is important for you. Gratzz.
I could never leave the charger and navigation integration in Teslas.
Sorry for the loss.
You’ve made a mistake :(
Ew, Tesla seats are the worst!
Congrats on the 6. Any EV is better than a gasser
Just took my first short road trip with my Egolf this weekend and it was lovely. Found many options for level 3 charging along the highway and was surprised how doable road trips with a lower range ev actually are.
Congrats! I was the opposite. I was a Tesla hater, then the Model Y was the winner in my household due to many factors including our local Hyundai/Kia and VW dealers being total knobs. Life is like a box of chocolates.
My sentiments exactly about Kia/Hyundai dealers. I am waiting for the 2024 Teslas.
Can you share what you think will be different about the 24 models?
Please the 24 models you refer to.
The 2024 MY will have
- 500 miles of range.
- Solar panel roof option to do passive charging on sunny days to reduce range anxiety.
- Enhanced software for efficient driving via map app; however, Waze works pretty good.
- Enhanced cabin filter system like the ID4 that purifies the cabin air from outside pollution.
- There’s of course, pictures circulating on the web of a new design that looks similar to the 2024 M3, which wouldn’t be a surprise.
Right now, Tesla’s site is trying to get rid of their 2023 with a $6,200 discount, so can’t confirm the MY’s looks until next year.
Don’t listen to this guy. None of those things are even remotely true.
500 miles - no
Solar panel - no
Software - already exists
HEPA Cabin Filter - already exists
refresh interor - Model 3 hasn’t completely switched, model Y wont be until late 24 at the earlist.500 miles? What are you smoking.
I don’t smoke. I’m drinking grandpa’s old cough medicine.
Lucid’s top model has a range of 512 miles. Rivian’s top is 410 miles.
The Rivian “Max Pack” to get 410 miles is a 180kwh pack. That’s a $20k upgrade over a standard car and almost triple the standard Model Y Pack. Such a big pack won’t even fit in a Model Y chassis.
If maximum space for your buck, ease of charging, and spartan design is your bag then Tesla is absolutely the way to go
I was really seriously considering a model Y! In fact if I had to go back and decide again I don’t know if I’d pick the Ioniq again or vice versa. It was too close
The Y fit my needs better, but I wish it looked as good as the ioniqs… Big fan of what Hyundai is doing nowadays, especially the n74
We have a Y - it’s great. But so is the Ioniq. As long it checks all your boxes, you’ll be good. I hope you get a lot of good years and miles on it!
For us the Model Y was not only more comfortable but much cheaper in terms of price.
What maintenance does an EV need over the first three years anyway? They aren’t going to give you new tires.
Free charging? Where do you even charge? The only good charger network is Teslas.
The free charging is at Electrify America station. Not as reliable as Tesla but still pretty common.
From what I understand Hyundai can also use Tesla’s network. They have a charging station section on their website that shows them on a map and there’s probably 30 within 20 miles of me and it includes Tesla stations as well.
As far as maintenance there’s no oil to change but they still top off fluids check brakes, hoses, rotate tires, replace air filters, check battery connections, wash it and charge it. My dealership offers complimentary charging any time I stop by as well.
It’s not a lot per se but when I had my Chevrolet I had to pay for all my service.
Hyundai can’t use Tesla Superchargers in North America yet, except for the very few locations with Magic Dock. And even those have proven problematic. Hyundai will provide an adapter to allow your car to use many or most Superchargers in Q1 2025.
Adapters to use the slower Tesla Destination Chargers have been available for some time.
Very informative and gracious response. Signed, a Tesla owner

There are a handful of “magic dock” chargers that may appear there. Those are pretty rare in most states, but they’re rolling out.
I don’t expect them to continue to roll out. CCS is a dead-end plug, so you’ll likely be fast charging almost exclusively with an adapter in the next 2-3 years.
You’ll likely need to carry two adapters, one for L1/L2 and one for L3 charging.
I wasn’t a Tesla hater, but I felt I couldn’t compromise on the things I didn’t like about the MY, like the spartan interior, reputation for build quality duds, etc.
I test drove a ton of other EVs, but as it turns out price is a hugely important factor and ultimately the tax credit + charging network + recent price cuts won me over. I got over the flaws pretty quickly.
The EV6 came the closest to making me go in another direction though.
but as it turns out price is a hugely important factor
…you didn’t realize this when going into the buying process?
I was a Hyundai tech for 7 years. Piece of shit company and cars
Why pieces of shit?
“Hyundai has completely turned their brand around…”
Engine fires leading to deaths, KIA boy thefts leading to deaths, child labor in Alabama, endless recalls, firing whistleblowers actually looking out for customer safety.
The saddest part is that Hyundai, KIA go through so many trashed engine replacements they’re probably the least sustainable car company, period.
How much this sub supports an evil company is so sad you can only laugh at it.
Tesla seats were not comfortable to me at all. I have wide shoulders and it just was not for me
I guess it depends on the country but in Europe the Model Y is much cheaper than the Ioniq and comes with way more features as standard.
Make sure you check it has had all of the 12v issues fixed. A guy at work has one and it’s been in the shop 8 times with 12v issues 🙈
I guess shiting on Tesla and Elon is a cool trend in this sub…
and do not forget BYD is coming on strong in that area! ;)
It must make you very happy? Right?
Reading this post title gave me chills. What a horrible mistake. I came from a Tesla Model 3, and went to an Ioniq 6. It’s a constant mistake, a deep seated regret, every time I get in this car and it forgets everything I set. Beeps when I go to reverse out of my driveway (BEEPBEEPBEEPBEEPBEEPBEEPBEEPBEEPBEEP), always sets the tone for an angry drive. Can’t be disabled, like all its faulty “safety” “features”. Let off the brake in reverse and the car starts shooting backwards without pressing the accelerator. Go to Drive and it does the same damn thing despite having set i-Pedal mode 500 f*ckng times, now time to hit it for the 501st. (Guess who does this all right? Tesla)
That’s just the start of every drive. God have mercy on you if you want a usable navigation interface. No hope is here if you want to find PoIs on a map, or plan a route using a map-based interface; it’s all text with no way to view points on the map or along your route. (Guess who does this all right? Tesla)
Get out of the car and … now you have to consciously stand there and hold your thumb on the pad, like a fingerprint scanner in a James Bond film or something. Not a simple button (e.g. Nissan Leaf) or a capacitive button with immediate reaction (Polestar 2), but have to HOLD it there. For a full second. Or it won’t register. But you won’t know for a full second anyway due to the latency. So you have to concentrate on that whole moment for a full second… Enough time to remember how much you hate this fcking car. Oh. And if you walk away without locking, the door handles will stay popped out. (Would you imagine Tesla did this right too? Walk away lock!)
I’m so deeply upset with my Ioniq6, I’m about to take a several thousand dollar bath just to find a way to get rid of it and back into a cheaper, more sane, more modern Model 3 again. I regret every day I sold the Model 3.
It might be too late, and especially if you came from ANY gas car, the Ioniq 6 is an incremental upgrade… But between that and a Tesla? Lord…
Beeps when I go to reverse out of my driveway
A backup noise is required by law on EVs in the US. If you’re in the US then your prior Tesla was just manufactured before that law took effect. I’m sure all new Teslas make a backup noise.

All cars, ICE or EV should do this.
Good car, the ONE BIG NEGATIVE is motor tuning . . . they are tuned to be more efficient at lower speeds, definitely not Texas or Autobahn friendly. They should have Euro and North American specific motors.
That’s quite interesting since the places where range matters most is on highways. I am not all that interested in how far I can go in city traffic; I care about highway range. (I’m American.)
Do you have any more info about the engineering reasons why this is?
I don’t have any information about it specifically just commentary from folks in regards to the I6’s high speed efficiency. The I6’s lower speed efficiency is class leading while it’s higher speed efficiency is just average. Given its great aerodynamics, the only reason left is drivetrain and motor tuning.
