I just picked up my new M3 and was doing a drive with the sales reps and talking about the break in period.
He said that the car would be more powerful and faster after bringing it in for the break in service. He said the ECU is dialed back quite a bit until the first service.
I’ve never heard of this before and can’t really find anything online about it.
Is he talking nonsense or is this really the case?
He has an f80 which he had from new and worked there for 4 years so would hope he knows what he is saying.
Anybody else heard this?
I believe this is a myth as well. There are d reasons to follow a break in procedure but I don’t believe the ECU is updated/touched at the service. Fluids are simply drained to remove any metal and casting parts that are designed to wear in.
They said that with my car too but it turned it to be false. 2020 m2 for reference
There is no difference after the break in. They just change the oil and differential fluid.
I believe they change the differential fluid, oil and do just an ECU tune that allows the engine to access more power but not necessarily gives you more power. Folks on bimmerpost have dyno-ed before and after break-in and there wasn’t a difference. From a feel perspective it might feel ‘faster’ because you’re not supposed to actually redline the engine but post break-in you can go as high as you want really so some folks say it ‘feels’ faster. I didn’t feel anything different honestly as a G80 owner.
Break in service remaps your butt dyno.
Also, finally revving to redline is the first time you’ve accessed what that experience is like.

Have a new Ducati and my break in service allows for higher RPMs than pre break-in service, it’s basically limited to around 7500 RPM with 6 K being the warning. Post break-in 12500. May not be a remapping but gets rid of throttling on the ECU

I’ve bought 3 new M3’s - two F80’s and a G80 - and there’s nothing done at the break in service that adds power. It’s an oil and diff fluid change, that’s it
Find a new dealer/sales person who know what they’re talking about
My 2023 M4 wouldn’t go over 103 until after the break in service. Its 1200 miles, maybe a week and a half of driving.

What he probably meant to say was if you follow the break in period the car feels alot more powerful after
