Hi all,

Been a Toyota lover for a long time.

Driving a 2020 Corolla right now and I love it, but my gf needs a new car and I can afford a new one for myself and give her my car.

Love how reliable and well built the 06 Camry and now the 20 Corolla have been to own.

I know the GR86 is collab with Subaru and I had some concerns about the quality.

Has anyone driven one of these long term? (5-10 years)

Thanks for any info you guys can give :)

    I have not driven one.

The only thing to look out for is that I’ve seen online spontaneous engine failure issues due to oil starvation in certain situations. I am not sure how common it is, but yeah.

If we’re talking about the GR86, I’ve driven mines since they first released in January 2022. I’m currently sitting at 33k miles and it’s my daily. Quality wise nothing significant has happened, to make a big deal.

What I will say is be prepared for the lack of space within the car coming from the Corolla. Also MPGs are bad considering the tank is also small as well.

The older ones are not horrible. The new gens haven engine problems at the moment. They’re incredibly fun but not reliable enough for me personally. I ended up getting a Miata instead. Same driving experience, slightly less refined but still incredibly fun. And the engines don’t blow up. Can you get a GR Corolla?

I mean, I have a buddy that had one and he doesn’t track his cars and his engine gunked out. It’s happening to everyone. I’ve been to track days and Miata’s are always in the top 3 of cars being tracked, new and older gens, so that’s also not a valid point. Lots of people on forums posting about their new 86 engines blowing with no track use, although not everyone might be telling the truth. All in all, anything that’s not 100% a Toyota engine might not be worth it but that’s my personal opinion and this is just my personal feedback. I think the 86 is cool but the colab with Subaru is enough to keep me away

Idk why I’m getting downvoted. Either way, the new 86 have issues that steer me away from it currently. The older models are fairly reliable as long as you stay away from the first couple of years. So a 20-22 one would be perfect imo, and if you find one bone stock even better

Can only talk about reliability of the first gen, on my FR-S I had 9 years of worry free motoring. Genuinely nothing went wrong on that car mechanically or electrically. The only car I’ve ever had that I spent $0 on any malfunction. Not even a recall, which seems rare these days.

I’m only half a year in the 2nd generation, got BRZ this time. Also zero issues to report but it’s also new too.

You want 1st gen to 2nd gen or GR86 vs new BRZ?

As a Canadian the biggest advantage in both generations was price. For some weird reason Toyota wants to command a price premium for these cars. Something like $2K-3K extra for the same car. It was different when Scion still existed though, Scion was always cheaper but just a bit cheaper.

Honestly just the typical issues a boxer has. The oil sometimes doesn’t drain to the bottom of the engine, like an inline would, resulting in earlier corrosion or wear. (Think the common head gasket issues some Subarus face) The GR86 has a Toyota fuel system I THINK. I might be wrong/ this was only a thing on the GT86. The BRZ and the 86 are almost identical cars, but I believe Toyota “toyotafied” their 86, and the GR86 is even more toyotafied, being it’s GR.

I might be totally wrong as it’s been a FAT second since I’ve read up and down the 86/BRZ, so somebody please correct me if I’m showing nonsense.
