Heya guys, been getting used to doing my own fixes for my car, so I’m lacking a bit of the maybe common-sense knowledge for some of this stuff.

What does the housing actually do, and should I replace it to be safe?

For posterity, I have a 2010 Avenger SXT 2.4L

Thermostat stuck open makes the car run cold, thermostat stuck shut overheats. Off the top of my head, your heater core could be clogged, you could be low on coolant, or some HVAC system issue that I know little about.

It’s not your thermostat. Is your car overheating (thermostat stuck closed) or running too cool (thermostat stuck open)?

You’re thermostat does not control the temperature of air inside the car, it controls the flow or not flow of coolant thru the engine based on its temperature. You are probably looking at a blend door issue if the air temp will not change

If your engine is running at proper temps as well as proper coolant level, and the blower fan works the first things that comes to mind would be a heater core blockage or stuck blend door actuator. You do not want to play parts roulette though and mess with things that ARE working. You could use a laser thermometer on the inlet and outlet of the heater core hoses and see what the temps are (with engine at operating temp). I would start there.
