A new beta release for the Steam client includes scoped-achievements.
Achievements can now be split into game mode specific, DLC specific and seasonal specific achievements.
In theory, this will now allow players to achieve achievement completion, even though they’re not interested in the multiplayer aspect of a game.

itt: People who don’t care about achievements telling people who care about achievements to just not care about achievements
I never pay attention to them. I find it interesting that people do.
Well for those that like them, I can really see why you would like this system better.
It’s always interesting to see people get like legitimately upset about being unable to get an achievement.
Like… Just don’t? Nobody is making you do this.
Almost seems like a sort of compulsion.
Drives playtime up and keeps people on the Steam platform.
Interesting way to get people interested in Left 4 Dead 2 again.
I mean, to this day no other game does what it does nearly as well as it does. And with the VR mod? Goddamn.
Yes, multiple progress bars to fill up! With extra rewards for filling them up! And seasonals! Jesus, this will be incredibly addictive to many.
Other side of the coin: the change to the completionist showcase, and just all of it as well I guess, is finally giving me the onus to break my cheevo addiction and go back to gaming for the sake of gaming.
This is good especially for things like Paradox games which was essentially p2w requiring all the DLC be able to get 100% completion. That’s still the case, but it would be better to know when you’re at 100% with all the expansions you currently have, or events you participated in.
How are achievements the “win” in your p2w extreme?
I just… Why even care? Just play the Paradox game and enjoy it?
“Stop enjoying the game wrong and just play like me!!!”
You’re right, but I’m still gonna be at 0% because I’m still not playing ironman
CK3 has achievements enabled on non-ironman
YESSSSSSSSSS!
That’s really cool! It does require developers to go through and set it all up though. I wonder if the DLC ones can be done automatically?
(Not at my PC so can’t check stuff)
I don’t know how it could be, because AFAIK this data point is exactly what’s missing. The only heuristic would be “was achievement XYZ added before or after DLC ABC released?”, but that’s gonna be inaccurate in tons of cases.
As of now, the only game in my library that supports it is Euro Truck Simulator 2. The Witcher 3 (even with the new remastered update) doesn’t have this feature and also doesn’t categorize it into DLC-specific achievements for example.
ooh ets2 is the game I immediately thought of when I saw this! this might motivate me to finally try to get more achievements in it
I’ve already seen (almost) this exact model with RetroAchevements subsets and it is indeed an improvement. It’s not just about having organized achievements, but mastering a base set and skipping the grind set is a nice touch. (They also do multi sets, glitch sets, challenge sets, etc).
RA is a bit strict on guidelines though, like all achievements being single player unless in a multiplayer subset, etc, which would be a good model for games with multiplayer modes that go defunct. Too bad I don’t see many developers going back and making that adjustment, though.
Hey I get 100% on base game Cult of the Lamb again!
This is neat. Looking forward to it.
As long as I can turn it off. I don’t get the draw for achievements/trophies.
There’s nothing to “turn off”. It’s just a different way to group/categorize achievements. If you’re already ignoring them then you won’t see anything different.
No, you can turn off notifications for achievements and it’s basically turned off.
Achievements fucken suck. Yes, let me do the predetermined thing the devs said and I will have committed achieve!
How is that different from completing the game itself?
Its a checklist the developers made for you. How is that anywhere near completing the game itself? I get this is my unpopular opinion but you dont need achievements to complete a game, or to track a game, or to prove you beat it. You can just play the game. Exceptions to this are things like SoT’s commendations that actually give you unlocks. I exclusively only do the ones that lead to some in game reward item or something. Achievement score go up feels like a microcosm of billionaire brain rot.
In a game with a quest log, you also have a literal checklist. What’s the difference between the two?
If I can achieve success within the game, why do I need an external graphic to indicate that I did so.
Quests give me xp and items? Achievements dont?
Depends on the game. Skyrim, for example, doesn’t always give a reward, especially for the main quest objectives, it only advances the plot. And Team Fortress 2 is one game I know that gives item rewards for achievements.
Achievements dont advance the plot either so why care about meta collectibles?
I get that most achievements are “Completed tutorial!” and annoying crap like that, but I generally find the more challenging ones enjoyable.
Or for my joke reply: If you don’t like them, then just achieve nothing 🙂
Yea, definitely enjoyed some of the challanges.
100% (or near enough) surviving Mars, and those were fun
Kind of but kind of not. I will look at them when I beat a game and it gives me a quick recap of what I might have missed. That usefulness varies wildly from game to game but sometimes I see an interesting challenge I want to try doing.
I cared when Bungie gave you the Recon armor set for having the vidmaster achievements. That was the last time.
Actually thats my biggest problem anymore but its more a microtransaction thing. You just dont earn cool stuff for doing challenges anymore. I love the few games that do give you something but it is fuckin RARE.
Gotta impress the shareholders. What? Fun? In the game? Shut up and buy this weapon skin for fifteen bucks.
With the down modding, dam and I thought reddit was an echo chamber…
I totally agree. I encountered them on playstation as trophies and thought there would be a 3D room you could explore all your trophies, maybe 3 or 4 per game total, finish the game and a few hard sub-bosses or quests. The reality was: walk across the room trophy, the save the game trophy, the pause while going to the bathroom trophy… Turned that shit off quick…
