Canada@lemmy.ca•Stephen Harper warns Alberta separatism will bring 'no benefit' | CBC News
1·2 hours agoReform party =/= Separatist party. He’s been advocating for more autonomy for Alberta, not Alberta separation. Come Monday you’ll get to see what an actual separatist party looks like.

1·2 hours agoYup, which is why we should have been diversifying decades ago. Kudos to Carney for doing it now, but like… this really shouldn’t be the conversation in 2026.

11·2 hours agoAll depends what they’re buying. If you drink Coke or Pepsi, for example, that would be an American brand made and/or bottled in Canada. And this is why this whole trade war thing is dumb.
Also:
Most centrists gave up on the loblaws boycott after a month.
I didn’t even know there was a Loblaws boycott. I only shop there if I have no other option.

11·2 hours agoEh. I’d say he had help. Trudeau senior wasn’t exactly Alberta’s friend. Not to mention the 90’s were all about Quebec.

1·8 hours agoI mean, sure. But that’s not exactly advocating for Alberta separation. And if memory serves, a guy named Peter won the PC leadership and then promptly folded like a cheap shirt.

2·8 hours agoI mean anything’s possible, but when did the government start talking about this pipeline and when was the referendum announced? Separation or not, we’ve needed to reduce our dependence on the US since the start of Trump 2.0. We actually should have started before that.

1·8 hours agoWhich might be the only reason I check them out again. Are they doing it on the radio too? That would be useful for me if I ever decide to attend a Charge game in-person. Not a cable subscriber and last I checked YouTube was blacked out if you’re in Canada so I haven’t checked them out as much as I’d like to. Might fix that.

1·8 hours agoI think it very much depends on your perspective, and also how old you are. Keep in mind I was 25 when the financial crisis hit. There really hasn’t been a decade in my adult life where there hasn’t been a once-in-a-lifetime event (I turned 18 and 9/11 hit). If I’m gonna wake up tomorrow with a chip on my shoulder, I have evidence. And if I let all of that shit define me, that chip on my shoulder’s gonna be Ontario-sized.

1·8 hours agoWaitasec. When did he explicitly advocate for separation? He advocated for more autonomy, which is not unprecedented (see also: Quebec), but I’ve always seen him as pushing for more freedom within confederation, not freedom from confederation. Happy to be corrected.

5·8 hours agoI mean, sometimes cheapest wins. As long as what you’re walking out with is Canadian or at least not American. Personally my other options are Loblaws and Metro, and between the three of them milk is usually cheaper at Walmart, just as an example. And yes, I buy a Canadian brand.

21·14 hours agoScience fiction, medical/police/similar dramas, the occasional sitcom, etc. The Big Bang Theory, for example, is not on CBC. Star Trek is not on CBC. The Expanse didn’t originally run and currently doesn’t rerun on CBC. Chicago PD/Fire/Med isn’t on CBC. Grey’s Anatomy isn’t on CBC. Even ER isn’t on CBC. I’m sure they have original Canadian content that tries to be similar, but if you have to literally flip through their catalogue to try to find a show that checks off vaguely similar boxes, that’s most of the problem. Most of the shows I listed are on Netflix, Prime or Crave. Or if you’re strictly buying Canadian, Crave.

1·17 hours agoOh, I absolutely didn’t see that as a flex. In fact I kinda hoped your experience might catch something I missed. If anything I’m disappointed - in the city, not you.

The other half of the series is only on Prime.
