Ottawa mayoral candidate Jeff Leiper has promised to triple funding for night ambassadors and safety outreach, fill empty commercial spaces and create a dedicated area for festivals to improve the ByWard Market if elected later this month.
But he still won’t tell us how he plans to pay for this stuff. Like… I would love to vote for this guy. But work with me here.
“Families in Kanata, in Barrhaven, Orléans, they want to visit this treasure in our city, but they don’t feel safe,” Leiper said at a media conference on Thursday.
No we don’t. We want our local communities to be vibrant and have local events and activities.
We want events where we can meet our neighbours and friends and have a good time. Not another commute.
Wo. Hey now. You can’t be getting all logical and factual in an online Ottawa community. That’s against at least 4 different rules.
@sbv @quanin can we not have both? I’d love to visit the market more. It’s not that I don’t feel safe though. It’s because compared to other capital cities around the world, Ottawa is very dull. Be it downtown or out here in the suburbs. When the car is king, everything else just becomes hard to get to or not very interesting.
With a finite budget, I’d prefer my (entertainment) taxes be spent closer to me.

Even if the train came out near me, I still would prefer not to commute 20k for an entertainment experience. Expecting me to leave my neighbourhood to do stuff weakens my neighbourhood.
