I bought a Highlander in November of 2022.

Lie 1: After I paid, the dealership informed me a second key wasn’t available , but I would get it “in 2-3 months.”

Lie 2: In October I called Toyota corporate customer service (not the dealership) and they told me I “should get a letter later this year”.

Lie 3: I called Toyota again and tried to nail down a more specific date and the person said “the letter will arrive later this month”. (Still October)

Lie 4: October goes by, still no letter. So in early November, I called Toyota again and they said I’d get a letter “later this month”. I told him that’s exactly what the last guy told me, and asked him to escalate my case.

Lie 5: I got a voicemail from the escalation person apologizing, and telling me that I was scheduled to get a letter “later this month”.

I called that number back and said I needed something more specific than “later this month” or “later this year”. He put me on hold for a while, came back and said ”Oh, your vehicle was supposed to be in phase 2. You should have gotten a letter months ago, but it looks like for some reason we didn’t send it to you.”

Seriously? What would have happened if I hadn’t called them repeatedly??

Toyota customer service is embarrassingly bad.

Same boat as you, been waiting for a key since April for my Tundra. I’ve been given different phase numbers every time I’ve talked to someone. Pretty much gave up at this point.

I’ve had multiple Toyota dealers fuck me around on keys with two separate CPO vehicle purchases. It seems like a common weak point.

If they said you are in phase 2 that means it should be available now. Call your local Toyota, request to make an appointment to pick up second key. These fobs have to be programmed at the dealer.

I waited 2 months for mine 2023 Tacoma spare fob but Dealership did send a girl 30 miles to deliver it to me.

Tacoma keys were never part of this. Also, the keys that are backordered have to be programmed in person with the vehicle.

I your case, they just FINALLY found your second key, probably in a salesman’s drawer or something.

No one here actually knows what they are talking about. There’s been a key shortage for Toyota and Lexus since early last year. Dealerships were supposed to alert customers to the fact that the cars had one key but didn’t. Initially it was thought that the issue was going to be resolved at a quicker pace than it turned out to be. Once they realized that the production was extremely far behind and was not improving they decided to issue second keys as part of a customer support program. The first set of people being those who purchased a vehicle any time before March 2023 was expected to receive their key in august 2023 and the next waves were announced some time after the last time I looked there were 2 additional waves after the first planned but I haven’t worked for the company for quite some time now. The fact of the matter is that anyone who told you a date before summer 2023 didn’t know what they were talking about and was trying to get you off their back because you were angry and they didn’t have an answer for you. For anyone saying it depends if the dealership was telling him this or corporate it doesn’t matter. there are no corporate Toyota or Lexus dealerships all of them are privately owned and those dealerships purchase the vehicles directly from the manufacturer corporate is not involved anywhere after the dealer purchases the vehicle as corporate already sold the vehicle and they have no knowledge of manufacturing or delays as the manufacturers also act independently of corporate.

I never called them about mine and I got a notification in the app that my key was ready. This was about 11 months after buying my car. Made an appointment w the dealership and they got the key and programmed it.

What my friend did when they only gave him one key fob with his new 2022 Camry is he got the warranty for the key fob, then three months later he claimed it lost or damaged under the key fob warranty and they have him a new key fob in less than a week.

Call your local dealership and have your vehicle’s VIN ready. Your dealership will take your VIN down and order a key for you. It’ll take some time for Toyota Corporate to dispatch a key to the dealership after they place the order, so I’d probably check back with the dealer in 3 to 5 business days. After they have the key, you will need to schedule an appointment with the dealer to have the vehicle programmed to recognize the new key.

If for some reason your dealership gives you the runaround about your key, call the Toyota Brand Engagement Center regarding recall “23TJ01” and explain the situation again. Toyota occasionally will “goodwill” a key to the customer if for some reason the dealership can’t order a key for them.

If you want anything escalated by the people at that dealership you need to go in person. Their business plan is to make money by selling things (service, cars, warranties) and will always prioritize in person people buying things

Nothing makes a sales manager motivated to appease than an irate and vocal customer on the actual sales floor, on a busy Saturday

Having sold cars on busy Saturdays, this is the best way to get anything done post sale/post service at a dealership. First stern, sticky, and polite then irate haha

Getting them out of my showroom does, in fact, motivate me to assist them, or at least (in a case like this) let them know that it’s a corporate thing not a dealership thing, so they just need to call corporate.

DUDE!similar thing with me I bought my rav 4 a year ago and was told they have no second keys in stock. Called multiple times kept getting the run around. Finally nearly a year later get a letter to come get the second key. Really infuriating after spending so much money on a car. I feel like they have gone downhill
