Other cars I’ve driven can’t just freely go into reverse while in drive, I would have to put the brake in, and press the button on the shifter. I’ve only tried going in revweae without using my brake while going less then 1mph but it worries me that the shifter can freely move into reverse while driving, is there no mechanism in the car that prevents from that happening?

I had to look this up, I guess it won’t let you push it into reverse if it’s got any sort of forward momentum whatsoever. I used to think about this a lot when I was learning and putting it into 4th.

I learned the hard way on the first car I owned that if you are in reverse and in motion and then shift to drive - even if you’re going sllloooow, you can damage the transmission. I had always done that, and had to replace a transmission.

These days, I’ll come to a full stop and then shift to drive.

You should still apply the brake and make sure you’re 0 mph before shifting. I’ve seen a guy do that where he shifts from reverse to drive while moving and it jolts the car. It destroys the transmission so don’t do it.

So there’s no safety mechanism against that? Someone can just slide the shifter into reverse while driving?

Yeah. Lots of cars are like this. It’s not good, of course, but there are many opportunities to break your car. Same reason lots of old cars have manual hand brakes, and you can use it to initiate a slide.

While pulling out and shifting into reverse/drive without fully stopping? Or did you shift into reverse while going at speed ?

My gf used to do this until I told her it’ll wreck her trannyband cost thousands unless she changes her habits. She would out it in reverse, back up, and while the car was still moving backwards shift into drive and hit the gas. It felt so weird coming from someone who has never done that before.
