So yesterday she heard some weird noises coming off her car while driving and it ended up stopping in her. This is what she saw on her exhaust what causes this to happen and how to fix ?

My guess is it got revved really high for no reason, probably had low dirty oil, was misfiring and backfired when the engine blew. Needs an engine and exhaust.

It’s a 1997 civic and she said she wasn’t running it fast she hardly does, and the mechanic had recently changed the oil

This usually happens when a car without a cat is running too rich (too much fuel not enough air, if the cat is there and working properly, it would burn the fuel that was unburnt in the engine but would quickly become clogged.) The unburnt fuel would soak into the packing of the muffler, and when it gets hot enough, boom. This doesn’t, however, doesnt explain why the car to stop running. There may be multiple issues.

A new muffler is needed. Something allowed excess fuel into the exhaust and caused the failure.
