Hi folks. I have three vehicles, which all exhibit different behaviors after changing the engine oil:
- Silverado Duramax: Immediately after changing the oil, I get a good reading on my dispstick. No issues here.
- Tundra: Immediately after changing the oil, I get no reading on the dipstick. It shows that there is no oil. However, I start the car and I see a normal reading on the oil pressure gauge on the dashboard. After driving the car for a bit, I finally get a reading on the dipstick.
- Hyundai Palisade: Immediately after changing the oil, I get no reading on the dipstick. I don’t have an oil pressure gauge in this car. But after driving it for a while, I get a good reading on the dipstick.
My questions are:
- Is it safe to start the car without a positive reading on the dipstick? If not, what are the risks?
- Why would some of our cars not show a positive reading after initially adding oil, but show a positive reading after driving it for a while?

Let the oil run down the bottom of the oil pan, then do a reading.
It’s not that difficult to understand.
Some oils are thicker, engines are different.I was taught to add the correct amount, start the engine and check for leaks, shut down and wait 10 minutes to check k the level.
