Not sure about 2020, but I compared the '23s and the 6 speaker system is pretty awful, hate to say it.

So bad that I am even prioritizing the bose. You should go to a mazda dealer and see for yourself (Preferred, Select have 6 speaker, all the rest have bose)

I have the 2016 GT with the Bose speakers. The subs in the doors are paper crap that eventually get wet and detaches from the speaker frames and vibrates annoyingly. I’ve had to rip apart the doors to glue the speaker cones back on to the frames twice now. I don’t know why you would put paper speakers in a door that gets wet. I’m sure overall the system sounds better than the stock speakers, but they have their own issues. Maybe they have improved/fixed this since the 2016 model.

If you’re even asking this question then chances are you prioritize good audio in which case you won’t be happy with the base audio.

Bose even sucks. It’s a nameplate and has been for a long time. Its proper but it’s should be standard

My last 3 cars have had the Bose sound system. Great sound with the look of stock stereo to detract thieves. My last two have been Mazdas…2015 cx5 Touring edition and now 2024 cx-5 Carbon Edition. …the sound envelopes you . I can’t understand why someone would want a sound system that all they hear is bass and their car rattling from it. I highly recommend a model that has the Bose system.

Non Bose stock speakers are awful. Pulled them out the first week. Cheap low end cones.

I have a 3 and it’s really nice. I read that apparently Mazda fixed the speakers into the frame instead of the interior trim, and that have less distortion and better clarity.

I listened to both and the base system sounds like crap. The Bose system sounds great.

If you do get a car with the base system, replacing the stock speakers with some aftermarket ones is usually inexpensive and easy to do yourself via YouTube videos or instructions from Crutchfield (they provide detailed installation sheets for all makes and models). Even without an amp, a couple sets of 80-100 dollar door speakers will make a huge difference.

That being said the Bose system sounds awesome so if you can afford a higher model, do it.

The biggest difference to sound is the quality of the speakers, the head units/radio are all much of a muchness. Getting the standard radio and then upgrade the speakers after is more cost effective.

I had the 6 speaker in my previous 2014 Mazda 6. I thought it was ok at the time. Current 2018 CX-5 has Bose, and it blows the 6 speaker away. Night and day difference, so much better with Bose. A larger sub would be nice though.
