I trust my mechanic, but, might as well ask strangers on the internet for their opinion too. :)

2013 Hyundai Genesis 3.8L V6 - 185k miles - check engine light came on, a little overdue for an oil change. Took it in, said it was over 4 quarts low, dry dipstick, found metal bits in the filter (see pic). Diagnosis: severe engine damage.

There was no evidence of a leak on my driveway, I guess it was burning oil off, leaking some other way?

Anything I can do here other than sell it to a junk yard? Their quote for engine replacement is probably 3x what it’s worth. What’s the worst case scenario if I just keep oil in it and drive it locally to the store and back?

    Nope. The number one killer of these engines is being run low on oil, go look in the Genesis coupe sun, I’m the mod over there and I’ve seen a lot of posts like this over the years. This is why you should regularly check your oil and keep it at the full mark.

    Eventually the engine will seize up. That much metal in the oil filter it’s already too late. The bearings are probably toast at this point and it’s running on borrowed time.

    Crankshaft bearings were checked out from their location. Probably spun around a few times before doing so. Piston Rings probably had a good time too. Like skateboarders, just grinding the sides.

    Ok, nuff troll. Yeah, good chance the motor needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Gotta check them oils.

    You’re fine, these filters are designed to catch small shit like that so it doesn’t do any more damage to your motor, when you drain the oil, if you see metal bits there, larger than that, then you’re fucked. Do a full flush, (flush it with trans fluid, then flush trans fluid out with extra motor oil, then fill up in oil and you should be fine.

    Your mechanic isn’t wrong. When there are metal shavings ANYWHERE it’s not a great sign. It could be rebuilt but for almost the same price you could get a new motor with a warranty; because who’s to say if it’s rebuilt there won’t be another issue and then you’ll have to buy a new one anyway!

    It’s a 2013, consider it “I got my money’s worth” and move on. If you still owe money on it, sorry, the car probably is not worth replacing the engine in it. this is whats called a “Mechanical Total Loss”

    flush it, and drive it until it blows up. might be a week, might be a decade.
