Update:
the team has been able to build a solution that fixes the issue remotely. Roll out starting today
You would think they would have an A and B side loading of updates so that a failover is avail if something major goes wrong. Apparently they don’t implement this simple fail safe.
My cheap chinese light switch running Tasmota does that. No reason for a manufacturer selling a $$$ vehicle doesn’t already have that implemented. I wonder what went so terribly wrong for the update to crash like that.
Here’s a story without a paywall and more accurate details.
This is the downside of OTA updates. I think good in general but also creates too much pressure to keep pushing updates.
update can fail to install at 90 percent and turns both of the vehicle’s screens black
Sounds like a safety issue and should be a recall.
I’ve done a similar thing I pushed an update that caused the auto-updater to break had to make users manually update by downloading a new version. The kicker? I didn’t fix the bug properly so they had to do it again 😬
The second teams channel announcement I had to make felt like I was put in the stocks and every like reaction was a tomato hitting my face.
is it not possible to do what computers motherboards do were you store like 2 copies of the bios, and so if you update the bios and it fails you can flip a switch and change to the backup bios and use that in the mean time while waiting for the fix
And should have a dead man switch so if a heart beat isn’t seen, it reverts to its previous firmware. The fact that it can’t do that could mean that their OTA update process wasn’t ready for deployment. It was probably an incident waiting to happen. Good thing it only affected the infotainment, which also includes the full dashboard. Does the app still work? Can you see/adjust the charge through that? Not knowing the charge level could be stressful.
imagine you are in the wilderness and your electric adventure truck gets bricked overnight by a software update.
You wouldn’t have connectivity in the wilderness.
Its wild to me they dont have some akin to iLO or DRAC on these vehicles. It would not be expensive and could just use the same cell connection.
I usually sit on updates for a day or two before I start them up, unless I know there is a very important bug fix and this is why. It certainly paid off in this case.
From /r/Rivian:
Hi All,We made an error with the 2023.42 OTA update - a fat finger where the wrong build with the wrong security certificates was sent out. We cancelled the campaign and we will restart it with the proper software that went through the different campaigns of beta testing.Service will be contacting impacted customers and will go through the resolution options. That may require physical repair in some cases. This is on us - we messed up. Thanks for your support and your patience as we go through this.* Update 1 (11/13, 10:45 PM PT): The issue impacts the infotainment system. In most cases, the rest of the vehicle systems are still operational. A vehicle reset or sleep cycle will not solve the issue. We are validating the best options to address the issue for the impacted vehicles. Our customer support team is prioritizing support for our customers related to this issue. Thank you.
