Does anyone else get battery anxiety when their EV is not fully (or 90%) charged, even if you are not going to use the full range?

I only drive about 50 miles a day but still get anxiety if I don’t charge my car overnight.

Is there any issues with charging everyday only 10%?

    Other way around for me… if I know I’m not going to be going anywhere soon and I’m higher than 70%, a tiny bit uncomfortable. Prefer no more than 80% tops in those situations and better less.

    I do have good infrastructure near me and I’m on a very stable area of the grid; contributes.

    I just make sure I have enough range to reach the cottage (about 100km away) for an emergency and if for some reason I can’t charge there, the distance to the closest fast charger (40 km from the cottage), so 140 km total.

    Congratulations, you have irrational range anxiety.

    As long as I have at least 40%, I can basically go anywhere I need to in my area, so it’s of no concern if I leave home with 50% battery or higher. I use about 30% per day and charge daily to 80%.

    I got used to having 48 miles of range in a PHEV so I realized that in daily life range isn’t a thing to worry about.

    Less so over time. I’m still in year one so I like to keep it charged up, but at the same time I like having my car not be in the garage so it’s easier for me to go to work. I’m comfortable leaving it out off the charger down to 40% now. My round trip to work and back takes 18-25 percent and I have to leave charge for taking my kids to their extracurriculars and unplanned drives like taking my son last night to get his backpack from the next town over.

    On Sunday, I had the car on a road trip and pulled into a charger at a rest stop with 4% remaining. It just takes time to get to know your car and how it behaves.

    When my Tesla was 300 miles old I took it on a 3,000 mile road trip in the dead of winter. I learned its idiosyncrasies and how far it can go in real world driving. Since that trip I have Zero range anxiety.

    Here are some tips. You don’t give details on your car (why not?) so I’ll assume a modern car with 300 miles of range.

    • in an ice car there it’s a warning light that comes on when the gas gets low. I think of 10% charge remaining as that warning.

    • when planning a long trip into areas with poor charging support always navigate from supercharger to supercharger. My routes look like this: first where I want to go. Second where I’m going to charge. Ideally I get to the charger with 20% down to 10% charge. That amount leaves me a buffer for unforeseen events.

    • if you do get stuck without enough charge to get to the next charger Do Not run the battery to zero in some futile attempt to get there. Stop. Call a tow truck. Have them take you to the closest supper charger. It is massively simpler and less damaging to the car to drive it onto the tow truck.

    • my advice is to drive your car to a bunch of different chargers and get used to the way things work. The cure for anxiety is knowledge.

    Sometimes my pals pass me doing 40mph if I forget to charge and need to limp home with only a few miles spare

    Nope, I charge my car to 60% and arrive home with 35% daily. If for some reason I have to go on a road trip immediately after getting home from work, I will hit a DC charger in town.
