I was driving to work the other day, engine started smoking up bad, had to get the car towed.

Turns out the I cracked cylinder head on my cx5, and even better it’s a known issue, a design flaw and one they have corrected. Yet the people with this problem are left to fit the bill. I have it sitting in the shop with a quote of almost 7 grand to fix.

I can’t afford this fix and I don’t know what to do, I wish I could just total the car at this point.

I love my car, she has been a great car and I have kept up on the services and everything, but now I’m left to deal with their flaw.

I’m out of warranty of course and I’m going to argue with the dealership and Mazda because this is utterly unacceptable and should have been a recall!

And plenty of other people had to deal with it too, thankfully nobody has been left stranded somewhere because of it.

I also have 2019 cx5 and same thing happened to me. Dealership quoted me $3-$4k but I bought the extended warranty bc I know my luck with car. Car only has maybe 30k miles on it when it cracked and started smoking/leaking oil.

Wait for the next monsoon and go drown it…another reason why extended warranty is a must…

Isuzu Troopers had a known cylinder head cracking issue.

When my ‘88 started smoking, took it into the dealership and got $2,500 as a fix price. Found out it was a known defect, and lit Isuzu up.

Completely repaired for $0.00, after which I started buying…Mazdas.

    We own 8. Yay.

If they won’t cover it, don’t give the dealer that repair business. You can get a used engine installed at an independent shop for far less than a dealer will charge.

My local Mazda dealer only charges like $100/hr for labor. Very reasonable for a franchise dealership.

But then again my career in the automotive industry has mainly been at Volvo and Porsche (the Volvo dealer I was at charged $270/hr for labor.)

Dude my Porsche dealer doesn’t even charge that… Are you sure that’s just labor? Or is it the entire job divided by the hours they said it would take?

In Canada we get 5 years unlimited mileage warranty on a powertrain . Not sure about the US though.

My Mazda is a 2015 3 HB with 2.5L and manual that I bought new with a 65k mile warranty. It currently has 132k miles on it and it’s been very reliable.

I’ve only had to swap out some wear items over the years: shocks/struts, tires, engine mounts, spark plugs, brakes, etc.

I get that it sucks, but it isn’t the dealerships fault. They can’t do anything for you if your out of warranty. You need to open up a case with Mazda customer support if you really feel like you deserve compensation for it

A lot of dealers are offering 10 year, 100k powertrain warranties now at no extra charge when you buy a new Mazda. I got one when I bought my Mazda3 in July.

    You’re not alone…

Ford have done exactly the same to it’s loyal customers with the Ecoboom engine and a dodgy automatic gearbox.

As usual, profit comes waaaay ahead of customer service.

That sounds like a very high estimate for a head job. Take it to a mom n pop shop and get quotes, or just call around instead of taking it everywhere

FWIW there was a well known manufacturing defect with the 2018/early 2019 2.5 NA cylinder heads causing them to crack. I would get on the line with Mazda corporate ASAP to try and make this right, especially if there’s any way you can verify the head on your engine was made in the Mexico factory.

    https://www.mazdaforum.com/forum/mazda-cx-5-54/2018-cx-5-blown-head-cylinder-head-gasket-45796/page4/

“I was a service technician for a while at Mazda and the reason why this has been happening is because there are two factories where the cars are made (Japan and Mexico) and there was a bad batch of aluminum heads and now its causing every engine with the bad head to crack by the last head stud next to cylinder 4. If you’re engine isnt hurt we just put a new aluminum cylinder head on the engine and swap over cams and rockers”

Yep. This. I contacted Mazda NA directly and blasted them until they offered to take my Mazda to the next nearby dealership where they entirely replaced my manual gearbox at no cost to me. Also got a loaner for the whole 4 weeks my car was with them. So, do your research, explain how you’re not a one-in-a-million case, and hint that you will make this public, gather everyone affected, and then make this a bigger problem than it already is. In my case… I pointed at safety being an issue, and how I will make a note of this issue publicly, and how Mazda ignored it and if anything were to happen to me or my family due to that gearbox failing whilst I’m traveling at 70mph on the highway or otherwise, that I would not be kind to them.

Shit that just happened to my cx5 turbo with 30k miles. Luckily it’s under warranty and they are replacing it with a new engine but sheesh, thought Mazda was at the top for reliability.

When I got married 12 years ago, I had just purchased a new Mazda 6. Loved that car. Four years later a truck ran a red light and T-boned is in an intersection. Struck us on the passenger side where my wife was. Car kept us safe. Immediately bought another Mazda 6 to replace the totalled one.

Later bought a 2018 CX-5. We love our Mazda’s. We were excited to pick up a CX-90 this year and keep the Mazda train rolling with our new kiddo on the way.

Took the CX-5 in to the dealer for service. Tech says you have a faulty cylinder head, it’s leaking oil. There is a service bulletin for this known issue. 7k to fix.

I’m naive, I thought that Mazda would help out with the repair since it was a known defect and it has affected many 2018-2019 models. Nope. Nothing. I said, “okay, I’ll buy that CX-90. The wholesale auction price is 16k. If you can give me 12k I’ll walk out of here today with a new car.” They kept me at the dealership for 4 hours saying not a problem only in the end to offer me 10k.

No one cares about my sad story. My business isn’t going to affect Mazda. But I honestly felt like I was a super loyal Mazda fan and they screwed me over. The very next day I bought a new Tesla. They gave me 13k for the trade and all the paperwork (I kid you not) took about eight minutes.

Mazda lost me as a customer and I’m not looking back.
