Among decided and leaning voters, the BC Conservatives lead the BC NDP by just under 8 points, 44.7% to 37.2% with the Green at 11.2%, One BC at 5.7% and Centre BC Party at 1.1% rounding out the field.

Looks like malpractice.

I keep seeing people saying ‘NDP has been in power long enough’, ‘their policies suck’, ‘they spend too much’.

Well hello, it’s easier to spend than save. Who gutted BC’s crown corps? Oh right the BC Liberals/BC Conservatives/BC United side. NDP has literally just been playing ‘keeping shit together’ since 2017.

Let’s face it, the province has been effectively hollowed out by 16 years of BC Libs. Go on, tell me how you’re going to somehow undo 16 years of faux ‘balanced budgets’ (vast majority of it was selling BC’s assets and cutting budgets that won’t have an immediate effect, but never reinstated) with only 9 years.

16 years compared to 9 years. Tell me how one can somehow make more wealth in less time than you spent it as a government body.

16 years of faux ‘balanced budgets’

Not only that, they need to patch things back up together while 6 of the 9 years in power have pretty much been in a terrible global economy. The libs fucked shit u awhile in a great economy for the most part.

The BC Cons are a disaster. The chaos in their own party is entirely of their own making through being both completely incompetent and not even trustworthy to each other. They’ve barely been able to manage holding themselves together. BC voters potentially giving them a chance to run the province when it looks like they couldn’t organize a hotdog eating contest is basically choosing self-inflicted brain injury as a governance position. Just nuts.

That doesn’t factor in how most conservatives are packed into a handful of voting districts.

Conservatives literally have to put the words Liberal or Social in their party name to win in this province.

I’m kinda surprised the conservatives would be so popular considering all the drama lately.

Eby and the NDP have been in power long enough, and various recent trends lines have been negative enough, that people want a change. Even with its dysfunction, the conservatives are the most viable alternative – the greens only managed to field like 77 out of 93 riding candidates. NDP and Con are at like 92 and 93? You can’t even vote green in various areas of the lower mainland of vancouver, the most populous area of the province, theoretically overflowing with potential candidates, and which is far more left-leaning than areas like the conservative interior/north.

Plus, intentionally calling an election during a time of negative trends, just because your opponents are in disarray and you think you can win? It’s like a couple people want to have a foot race, with the NDP choosing when the race starts – and they intentionally wait until their opponents are off in the bathroom, to fire the starting pistol. That’s a really shit look for a leader, even if they ‘likely’ will win the race, it’s not the sort of action that inspires people to ‘follow’ in general; it’s pretty clearly immoral, even if politically expedient. I’ve heard more than a few people comment on it. We’ll see how it pans out for eby on election night, but it’s definitely the sort of behaviour people don’t generally seem to want to condone/support.

Hard to succeed when you have a shoestring budget and elites smearing you relentlessly. Also this is a petty thing to criticize a small party for.

I think the move to call an election wasn’t fully thought out, but who wouldn’t call an election when your opponent’s side is imploding? But hindsight 20/20. The messaging from Eby is poor from day 1 of his tenure as premier. The things he proposed should have been announced even without the ‘threat’ of an election.

That being said, 9 years of straight NDP isn’t going to magically fix 16 years straight of BC Liberal policies and spending. It’s easier to spend/sell assets than save/generate wealth. It certainly didn’t help with COVID in there alongside a trade war. BC Liberals effectively bankrupted BC.

But sure, let’s vote for the BC Libs/Cons for more tax breaks…that will fix the budget! Somehow their words speak louder than their actions…

meh I’ve already heard that sort of statement a whole bunch, and personally don’t give a shit anymore.

The BC Liberals were a corrupt, shitty party. That doesn’t mean the NDP deserve support, especially as they’ve made a bunch of gaffs lately, and have generally done a poor job at managing various parts of the provincial portfolio. Lots of people myself included, are sick of voting for “the lesser of two shitty options” – the NDP ought to be putting out things that make people want to follow them / elect them. Their approach to this election call does the exact opposite, and runs a high risk of passing control of the government over to the Conservatives YEARS earlier than they had to. And at a time when such a hand over could cause serious damage, given what’s going on in Alberta, the USA’s new regime/international aggression, etc.

They could’ve waited till like 2028? 2029? Hell, even if Eby had waited until the various fringe parties had ‘settled’, so that the vote split on the right was more assured, they’d have a better shot at maintaining power in a FPTP system. With all that time they could’ve had, they could’ve worked on setting up proportional representation – something that a splintered right-wing would likely be more agreeable to, and which would encourage better governance going forward.

We get Eby taking a huge risk with a stupid election call at a stupid time. Like a ship entering a dangerous arctic passageway, suddenly declaring they need to elect a new captain mid voyage, it’s just ridiculous and reckless. Or, sitting down at a restaurant and the waiter brings you a plate of moldy food – and defends it as the “best option” because the other meals are literal piles of feces. Fuck telling people to vote to eat the mold – tell the restaurant to do better. Personally, I’m voting green this time around, largely because fuck the other two parties – even if there are a bunch of things in the green platform I don’t like.

That’s an absolutely shit take on the situation.

Like in two fucking years, when we would’ve had the regularly scheduled election, you would’ve had a heavily segmented/divided right – the two splinter parties that have formed haven’t had enough time to really disrupt the regular right-wing base, and aren’t in enough ridings to matter much. Right-wing voters will have an easy time ‘rallying’ because there’s only one right-wing party that can actually form government.

But even more, in two years time you’d, “theoretically” at least, have either a positive progressive wave to ride with the defeat of Trump in America, or you’d have an even bigger protest-type movement to rally against from the sane part of the spectrum.

THAT would have been a perfectly fine time for an election, and likely would’ve turned out fine for the NDP. If they’d managed to turn around their current shit show in those two years too, they would’ve been sitting pretty. With Carney’s “Major Projects” shit and all the federal investment, the NDP could’ve leveraged all that investment and spun it as partially their success. But no, instead, let’s call a fucking election when mills are fucking closing – that’ll win us some votes! Fucking moronic.

So now, we have predictions like this on 338Canada – a 75% chance at the present, based on an aggregate of polling sites, of a Conservative fucking majority.

So yay. Currently a 75% chance that we’ll have a conservative party majority. A conservative party that’s staffed up with Alberta separatists still from Findley’s manipulations. A conservative party that’s likely to be a LOT more agreeable to Trumpian bullshit, and which will likely support Alberta’s separatist aims.

Perfect huh. That’s your idea of perfect. Brilliant.

Fucking well said. This mfker decided to basically hand over power to the cons and people (am in Ontario so not me) are supposed to wipe his ass? Well he can do a whole lotta shit that “isn’t as bad as the cons” and expect people to support him, can’t he. It’s not like there weren’t polls showing early election would likely put cons on top. So he’s either rowing for the cons or stupid. I’d probably still vote for him if I were in BC to nerf the cons but I cannot blame people who don’t. Supporting mediocrity to avoid the worse outcome is how we got where we are in a whole lotta places.

Supply and Confidence agreements can work in Canada.

The BC NDP sabotaged electoral reform by putting proportional representation for a referendum in 2017 while the greens just wanted it passed in the legislative assembly.

I think that if the NDP is somehow able to squeak out a minority here (polls indicate otherwise), then they might have a chance in the future if they changed their leadership. They won’t though.

I am really worried that the cons will come into power, but I really don’t see the NDP coming out of this one alive with Eby at the helm.

Conservatives have shown themselves incredibly poor fiscal stewards across Canada. When they say they run government like a business, it is more like in a “make numbers look rosy this quarter, next quarter is someone else’s problem” way, as opposed to a business that intends to last into the long term. My biggest concern is that the province’s assets will be sold off by the BC Cons to pretend the budget hole is filled in whatever year they feel like they need to pretend they are fiscally responsible.

I was interested in this comparison so I did a small amount of research on total cost of living in Vancouver vs Stockholm Sweden for a high earner like a doctor, lawyer @$330k CAD with a modest 3 bedroom home (townhouse) along with the proposed NDP tax increases. This is the conclusion. High earners under the proposed system in Vancouver get the high taxes of Sweden with the high cost of living of right wing capitalism:

        • You save more cash in Stockholm:Despite losing an extra $1,717 CAD every single month to Swedish income taxes, the structural sanity of the Swedish housing market saves you $3,091 CAD a month in raw mortgage math. This leaves you with roughly $1,380 CAD more surplus cash per month in Stockholm.
        • The Equity Difference: In Vancouver, you are building equity on a larger asset ($1.27M vs $912k), but you are heavily exposed to interest rate volatility. If rates jump 1% at renewal in Canada, your budget breaks. In Sweden, your exposure is mitigated by the interest tax write-off.

As much as it pains me to be a single issue voter I have to vote conservative, every other party has an issue with firearms and intends to criminalize me for something I purchased legally and only got to use once before being turned into a safe-queen.

Shitty because I share quite a lot of liberal values, I just cant justify voting for a party that for the last 6 years has lied to Canadians claiming folks who legally own firearms are the cause to the increase in firearm related crime.

Hell not to mention our piss poor self defence laws.
