Puts in context all the fear mongering about China’s military buildup while they’re sitting at 1.7% of GDP.

Fleeing the US to Canada feels a bit like fleeing Nazi Germany to Poland in the early 1930’s. I hope it doesn’t end up that way.
My preference would be for active nonalignment in the China-US rivalry while broadening relations with other stable nations looking to similarly ride those waves.
I really, really hope we do not fall in line with the US. A window has been opened for us by Trump, but the little I’ve heard from Ray and Carney regarding China makes me worry we will align with the US after all in what is the world’s principal rivalry.
What a completely tactless piece of trash thing to say.
It’s definitely not good for students. It might be what a student ends up eating because of lack of resources needed to eat better, but anyone who is engaged in learning and needs their brain to perform well isn’t going to get what they need from this.
I wonder, what would the consequences have been for Ukraine if Russia had first built an air defence system that extended across all of Ukraine’s airspace? I’m sure nothing bad could have come from that for Ukraine… right?
This was entirely predictable and is quite gratifying.
Not really sure how any US diplomat can be taken seriously in their public statements when sycophancy for a completely dishonest and untrustworthy leader is a requirement for keeping their job.
I would rather they be sanctioned.
Better late than never.
“There is no public uproar and little clamour from within the institutions; … Resistance must come from outside the institutions”
Pretty revealing take. “Resistance”
Alberta 2025 = Crimea 2013
We are far from out of the woods on dealing with the rising far right movement. We need to see other parties divide the moderate conservatives from the far right conservatives on wedge issues like Alberta separatism and other crazier stuff from the far right.
At the same time, the Liberals and the NDP need to work on winning over the moderate voters who went with the CPC because of the economic & labour pains they’ve felt in recent years.
Also, killing off X in Canada would be great, but much more contentious.
I was relieved that the CPC didn’t form government, but we’re still in a lot of danger. Spend any time on X and you can see a full court press going on with propaganda to push Alberta separatism. The same stuff is going on now in Alberta that took place in Crimea prior to 2014, and the online media ecosystem is American. I see a lot of people stating Alberta couldn’t separate because of the treaties, but when a powerful country decides they don’t care about the laws, the courts aren’t going to save you.
But, do they know what to pair them with?
I find it interesting, and concerning, that in more MAGA-friendly corners of the internet it seems pretty common to see Canadians who are convinced the polls are all fake and manipulated and that Poilievre is headed for a sure majority, just based off of rally attendance and anecdotal observations of lawn signs.
It’s a completely different reality from anyone who’s not in that bubble of conservative social media.
Nobody cares if your want to go your own direction. It’s only an issue to anyone if you’re a dick about it.
So, you’re telling me that a population of people who spend a lot more time listening to messages that their country is broken, that streets are rampant with crime, and that mass murderers are getting out of jail early is a population of people who feel less safe?
Huh, wouldn’t have expected that.
I can’t be the only one who can’t help thinking of the rumored Trump golden shower tapes every time he talks about the golden dome. It’s what I imagine he’s dreaming of, but on a continental scale.
