I would have posted this as a link under other article, but I am really tired of Gavin Newsom always getting the spotlight. I could care less about this cardboard cutout impression of a human being.
This article doesn’t annoyingly center Gavin Newsom.
Now if I can just get it past our HOA Board… There’s very strict rules in the CC&Rs about what’s allowed on the balconies. And I don’t think there’s anything in the law to address that.
I recommend looking at California civil code section 714
Thanks!
Looks like they can make restrictions based on aesthetics but not if they decrease the efficiency by more than 10% or the cost by more than $1000. And can’t prohibit entirely.

Good luck with that. Boomers think solar panels are ugly.
Hidebound thinking isn’t exclusive to Boomers. The fussiest member right now is the youngest man. I’m technically a boomer myself and I have gotten farther Left every year since adulthood, (plus of course the general trend has gone farther and farther to the Wrong.)
I was able to get some ordinary camping-type solar panels approved by the Board several years ago, but only to have in the closet, available if I need to recharge the emergency Jackery batteries I keep plugged into the wall in case of a power outage. And that’s only because my spouse has several life-essential medical devices.
(No we never go camping. Life on the edge is a daily thing. And no I don’t have time to run for the Board myself)
Because all old people are exactly the same, right? /s
