I never thought much about the concept of marriage in a fantasy setting. Are they going to describe the rules for mutually shared tax deductions in the next version of DnD? It could get complicated with all the different religions and races.

I know this one! Not all countries provide tax deductions for marriage. I was going to say there is not one in Japan, but on looking it up, it is more complicated than I care to look at. (I understand spouses tend to have separate finances, but I am far from Japan.)

The historical lens on taxes and marriage is also as complex as one might think.

Point being, in your setting, marriage does not need to have any tax implications at all.

Edit: Removed paywalled link about history of marriage.

Everybody missing the point of green text: it probably didn’t happen. It’s also 4chan. So yeah.

But, DM clearly set a timer on when apocalypse would happen if certain goals weren’t met. Players sought other goals and thus, lost the campaign.

So basically the DM created a world with a natural disaster incoming, and the players decided to instead destroy the indigenous nation, install a new puppet leader that adheres to Western values and voting rights, and ensure gay marriage is legalized even though homosexuality was tolerated in this society, just marriage was a civil and financial issue and not necessarily related.

Who’s worse? The DM, or the imperialist players?

Literally doing the same shit the CIA would, and people wonder why this shit happens. It’s a bunch of fucks who think that their Western values translate to every culture and is more important than respecting their sovereignty.

“The population rising up against authority and for social progress is clearly colonialism from beyond the force wall”, is certainly one of the takes of all time.

How dare you infer I have no whimsy. Motherfucker I am chock full of whimsy and joy.

What is more whimsical, enjoying a fresh new world for what it is and exploring it and accepting their differences that you may not fully understand, or asking if it has gay marriage and democracy and destroying it if it does not already reflect your neoliberal values?

Just because neoliberals tolerate gay people doesn’t mean that gay rights are inherently neoliberal. Democracy, maybe, but we don’t know if they were doing elections with unlimited campaign spending by property owners or if they were voting in workers’ councils. Classical Athens, the United States, the PRC, the DPRK, and the Republic of Ireland all have/had democracies in some sense, but they vary massively in implementation, and anyone who calls all of those neoliberal is either very confused or not being sincere.

Furthermore, trying to change the world is central to nearly any RPG. A crusade to obtain human rights doesn’t prohibit whimsy or enjoyment, but when you do the fantasy equivalent of traveling to modern Gaza to organize a festival, you shouldn’t be terribly surprised when you get a bad ending regardless of whether you accomplish your goal.

Also, there’s no indication that the player characters were outsiders in the first place. You’re characterizing them as invaders, but this could have been an internal proletarian uprising.

DM is a mild bigot, but I respect the story continuity.

I feel mild bigot is still a bit overly critical… I mean, whatever hangup he may have had he still played out the story and planned around it… and that’s a lot of work. If he was truly a homophobe he coulda just not done any of that… but was a relative good sport about things.

I don’t know much about DnD but i don’t think OP necessarily has any hangups or it can be certain they’re homophobic. They created a world with a history and problems and conflict just like any realistic one would have.

If they created a world where the neighboring country has a vast army, because its mostly made of slaves, that doesn’t mean they’re pro-slavery. It means they’re world building.

That’s just society nowadays. If u aren’t 100% pro-sth it must mean u are 100% against sth. Centrist views don’t exist anymore/aren’t allowed.

      I have to disagree.

Its more realistic to a medieval fantasy setting for marriage to be that way. Historically the upper class essentially did control who could get married, so they could use it to their ends, and were more bigoted than the lower classes - so gay marriage wouldn’t have been a thing even if gay relationships themselves were generally well tolerated in the rest of society.

If Anon had any hang-ups from the players trying to overthrow the upper class to legalise gay marriage (aside from the players completely derailing their campaign), then they could’ve just stopped the session and not let the players even try it.

Having the Lich come at the end is really just the DM getting their own back on the players for refusing to engage with the actual campaign.

it’s dragons and magic and wizards and shit… what part of realistic medieval are you talking about?.. You’re telling me, we can have eldritch gods and sorcerers and shit… but a man loving another man is too world breaking for your “historically accurate” narative?..

being “no gays” in a fantasy is a DM choice… and doing the whole “but muh realism” is a tired cop out… plz stop.

Firstly, it IS the DM’s choice what setting they choose. If they want to mesh a realistic medieval aristocracy with dragons, wizards, etc., then that’s their decision. If you don’t like a DM’s world-building choices, you can always take your dice to another table.

Unless they DM is discriminating against the actual players, then they’re entitled to tell whatever story they like - and its up to the players if they want to sit there and play it out.

You’re acting like the DM stood with their head high holding a straight pride flag or something while shouting at the player for even daring to ask about gay marriage, rather than clarifying the marriage system of their setting.

Secondly, again, if the DM was truly a homophobic bigot as you keep saying - do you think they’d have continued going along with the player’s conquest to legalize gay marriage in the kingdom?

If they were truly a bigot and hated the idea of legalized gay marriage in their setting, they are equally as entitled to walk away from the table as all the other players are. Yet they stayed, narrated, and played out the whole thing - even though it meant watching their campaign essentially be overridden by something they weren’t as interested in.

Expecting a DM to build their setting based around what you think is acceptable, and calling them bigoted if they don’t, comes across as entitled to me (which is ironic considering you’re the one talking about red-flags).

Yes I did repeat your point back at you, because I don’t understand how you can acknowledge that DM Anon is clearly okay with gay marriage, hence allowing their campaign to be derailed for the explicitly purpose of legalising it within the setting, and then still call them a bigot at the same time for daring to depict a setting that has disagreeable morals for the sake of their immersion and storytelling.

People are dogpiling you because you rode in on your own high-horse pulling an absolute trash take from your backside.

They explicitly said that gay people are tolerated, which requires there to be gay people. They also said that straight people aren’t marrying for love either.
