2026 has had a lot of great albums come out. I’ve listened to quite a few, but I’m sure I’ve missed a lot of good ones. So, what have been some of your favorites?

Here are some of mine:

  • Neurosis - An undying love for a burning world (post-metal)
  • Cairiss - Wilderness (blackgaze)
  • Mastodon - Marrow Deep (prog metal)
  • Fen - Elemental Part 1 (post-black metal)

    Devin Townsend’s The Moth

I’m not sure of the prog metal label actually applies seeing as it is a basically a metal opera (?) It’s the kind of album you need to listen several times to get it, but then it’s quite spectacular

Backup pick is Karnivool’s In Verses

While not being Prog Metal in the strict sense (although it has really a lot in common), I discovered my love for Technical Death Metal this year, listening a lot to e.g. the classic “Death” (which are really classic stuff though, so no recent realeases at all).

But the band that got me into the subgenre in the first place was “Art|Est”, which debuted in 2026.
And their released stuff is really not bad for a newcomer.

Haken released an EP recently with their now 2-less member lineup. It’s pretty good, still unmistakably Haken. I’m looking forward to seeing them on tour with whoever they get as their touring bassist.

Also, does an anniversary re-master count? Meshuggah released a 20th anniversary remaster of Catch Thirty Three.
