Studio apartments near me start at $1750/mo. You need to make at least $27/hr to be able to afford that (including food, gas, bills). Most jobs are offering $18-$20/hr and after a few years you can top out at $24-$28/hr.
You can’t afford a house unless you inherit one.
i heard the rule is rent shouldnt be more than 30% of your income. i know people that are spending 2k/month in the west on a similar salary, and another was getting 2 jobs after making a disasterious decsion by renting downtown before she moved out to a cheaper area out of the city.
i only knew 2 people in my CC days that had <800/month n my HCOL area, they probably got it from things like craigslist, FB or friends and family. and not at those renting sites which probably dint exist yet, and before airbnb upsetted the housing crisis.
i assume like mines its a HCOL area. most people i worked with who arnt in tech, or not a MD or a high paying professional arnt living in a home they own.
even then on inherited, you still have to pay the taxes on the houses/property taxes, and utilities, most cant afford too.
That’s becoming impossible with rent increasing by $100/mo every year and wages don’t keep up.
plus nimbyism, and people trying to cash on "luxury style apartments. and this pretty much has unintended side effect of “people still living at home with parents, and having thier siblings that blossomed early resent other family members because one of them cant move out for whatever reasons” stories/experiences being posted on many platforms.
and many are staying at home with parents in the 30s, or 40s too. seen alot of posts of these on the subs, and most of the post are about people complaining how thier family member is staying at that age and they are “independant”
Forget it. Just find a good rental apartment. That’s basically what we can afford now.
That just rewards them by giving them most of your money for little in return. Van life for as long as you can stand in order to save up money until something breaks and housing is more reasonably priced again.
Where do you park long term in the city? Thats a lot of debt when people are already living paycheck to paycheck.
Fair enough. I’m not a big city dweller (nor have I ever wanted to be), so I wasn’t thinking of that. I have enough difficulty sleeping with downstairs neighbors that sometimes seem to have little respect for “common decency,” so I can’t imagine living in an environment that densely populated (let alone in a vehicle). I know it’s not a choice for some, and I’m glad I’m not in their shoes.
