I don’t want to hold the actions of the orange rapist against American artists who mostly all hate him anyway and deserve better, but let’s promote our own first.
Schitt’s Creek and Kim’s Convenience.
Never heard of Kim’s convenience, thanks!
Schitt’s creek is just great, just started rewatching it.
As someone who grew up in South Canada (US PNW), The Red Green Show will always be special to me.
Very much Letterkenny and Shoresy.
My favourite Canadian shows
- Kids In The Hall
- Red Green Show
- Loading Ready Run
Fuck yeah Loading Ready Run! I’ve started to be able to catch some Watch + Plays live which had been a delight.
Corner Gas! (Not the cartoon)
North of North is great too.
I found sooo few people who appreciate Brent Butt like they should.
If you like Corner Gas you’ll like Letterkenny.
If I like letterkenny will I like corner gas? I think I was too young when I first saw that show but it looked so dull
Probably, it’s a different vibe and captures a different part of that small town life
A lot of the more popular ones have been listed already but here’s a couple that I loved that are a bit more off the beaten path:
Tv:
- Little Bird - drama, if you want to cry your eyes out and watch a fantastic story about the consequences of the 60s scoop
- Late Bloomer - comedy by YouTuber Jasmeet Dutta
Music (indigenous):
- snotty nose Rez kids - rap/hiphop
- anachnid - electronic, I guess?
Nonindigenous:
- kimmortal - alt hiphop
- shad - alt hiphop
- mother mother - indie rock
- said the whale - indie rock
- the Jerry cans - folk (Inuktitut language and style)
Podcast:
- Stolen - true crime
Adding video games too:
- Don’t starve (and any Klei game actually)
- crypt of the necrodancer
- starbound (s/o even though I think they’re UK based not Canadian)
For music, I’d add The Halluci Nation (formerly A Tribe Called Red).
For games, I’d add The Long Dark
Would you classify the jerry cans as indigenous? I know they sing in Inuktitut, but I’m pretty sure most of the members are not Inuk.
Also, you have to mention Tanya Tagaq.
Oh you’re very right about that, I hadn’t looked into it properly.
I’ve only heard collabs with Tanya Tagaq, but I’ll check out more of her work, thanks!
Trailer Park Boys!
This is George Green fuck off!
- Orphan Black - spectacular SciFi
- Travelers - SciFi, Can/US mixed
Omg orphan black was so friggin good. I can’t believe Tatiana is not more popular than she is, just a fantastic actor.
Trailer park boys, letterkenny, shoresy
The house hippo
Maybe if the Americans had had house hippos we wouldn’t be in this mess
Sometimes there’s shit. On the outside. Of the torlet.
If you think that’s bad, you should see the urinus
Degens need to mind their scruples.
Podcasts:
- Canadaland
- Commons
- Canadian True Crime
- Someone Knows Something
- Uncover
Tv Shows:
- Schitt’s Creek
- Orphan Black
- Son of a Critch
I came here to say schitts creek! Took me 3-4 tries to really get into it but I’m glad I did.
Dated and off the wall - Kids In The Hall (1988-1995) … (with probably the most awesome intro song ever)
Even more dated and off the wall - SCTV (1976-1984)
Kids! Loved them then. Loving re watching!
ReBoot and Beast Wars
Captain Star and Undergrads
Clone High and Hilarious House of Frightenstein
Mudoch Mysteries and Wayne and Schuster
Paw Patrol and Mecha Builders
Kids in the Hall and Rare Earth
Johnny Strides and Jim Carrey

Great Big Sea and Scott Pilgrim
Sue Johannson and Under the Umbrella Tree
Telephone and Basketball
No particular order
Kdramas. They have exceptional series ranging from fantasy to thrillers, scifi and almost anything you can imagine.
They are not canadian I know, but since you said international minus magastan…
Squid Game, The Silent Sea, All of us are Dead, and there’s some others I watched that were quite good.
I’m all for anything not from that shit hole.
I’m old(er), and living near the border allowed for access to some great children’s programming back in the day.
Mr Dressup and Friendly Giant in particular. (side note, if you have access, check out the excellent documentary about Mr Dressup on Prime). As for music, again, being near the border, with one of the best alternative radio stations in the 90s (89-X), I was turned on to many excellent artists. To name a few…
24 Gone
The Tragically Hip
The Pursuit of Happiness
Bootsauce
Odds
Amanda Marshall
Moist
The Grapes of Wrath
and so many more. Most of these bands could still easily edge out anything new on the radio today.Moist… There’s a band I haven’t played in a while.
19-2 was criminally underrated
