Just wow!
What a psycho.
Those four cops could have been doing something actually productive for society.
But no, they’re protecting corporate profit margins.
They were responding to a call, which is what they are supposed to do.
What they should do now is have a serious conversation with the cinema chain about wasting police time and fine them. This is not a criminal issue, purely civil.
But we want the police to respond to calls that they receive.
But why 4? Why does the police feel the need to show up in force for two mothers and their gaggle of children? There is “responding” to a call and then there this, sending an implied message of “we are authorized to ruin your life in front of children, so you know you have to cooperate.”
The paper reports that the women agreed to leave the auditorium and continue the discussion in the foyer. Four police officers then entered the cinema lobby, which the woman described as “a bit dramatic”.
The number is dramatic, but the article doesn’t say what the cinema said to get the cops to turn up. Remember this is in NZ, our police don’t carry guns.
This is the really fucked up bit
“My niece asked nicely: ‘If you’re calling the police, are they going to kill my mum?’” one of the women told the newspaper. “And he laughed at that stage. He looks directly in her face and he said: ‘Yeah, maybe we’ll find out.’”
Why the fuck in NZ does a kid think that police go around killing people, thanks media for painting every cop like US cops.
The media wouldn’t be painting every cop like the US cops if the US cops weren’t like the US cops.
Our police apparently can barely wait for an opportunity to act militantly. Refer to the Kim Dot Com raid. That could have been accomplished with four officers.
Our police are (generally) really good. But they shouldn’t be enforcing a civil breach of a business’ terms of service.
If the information supplied to the police was that there were two individuals being beliggerent, with children around as well, they probably wanted strength in numbers.
Because they are so bored they want in on the action rather than patrolling. It’s the same reason you see 8 police cars all parked around a single pulled over vehicle. They are all hopped up on the 'drenny wanting to shoot somebody or sick a dog on them.
First, that doesn’t really happen here. Second, it’s incredibly rare for our police to even carry a firearm, let alone use one.
America isn’t the world.
True. I didn’t realize I was in the nz sub. Only speaking from experience in Houston, Texas, USA. Just shows how much I’m broken by our shitty police.
Agree. The police can’t evaluate a call out properly until they’re actually there.
I assume that the cinema called them with a slightly exaggerated description of the situation. All it takes is calling the (women) “belligerent” or similar to imply violence. Hence four officers.
My actual beef is that this business is socialising the cost of enforcing their terms of service by calling the police rather than paying for their own security.
I seriously doubt police respond to every single call. Some are just stupid calls or even crank calls. Plus four cops for this. Really unnecessary.
The Guardian article seems to be a bit light on details. It seems they were asked to remove the food or leave and get a refund but refused before getting into a “heated exchange” with staff, then the police were called. Apparently the brought in “a lot of outside food”, “Beverages, snacks, hot food, you name it.”
I haven’t been to the cinemas for a long time, sneaking in lollies and stuff was a given, but I think it’s understandable not to bring in hot foods and meals. Considering they’ve always had rules about no outside food, getting caught means either getting rid of your food or leaving. I wouldn’t verbally abuse staff if I’m the one breaking their rules.
The Herald article has a lot more detail: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/food-brought-into-pukekohe-movie-theatre-women-trespassed-police-called-after-heated-exchange/YPZA3KB3ZBCPVPLYMXIIACUBMQ/
An off-camera voice can be heard commenting on the employee’s race.
My god what trashy people. The Guardian article is much kinder to them than it really should be.
According to the New Zealand Herald, the two women took some children to see Despicable Me 4 at Cinema 3 in Pukekohe, North Island.
I read that as Pukehole at first and thought “that was uncalled for.”
I love that it’s listed as Pukekohe, North Island, like Auckland has disowned them so they needed some other way to describe the region.
I imagine that quite a few Pukekohe residents would bristle at being called Auckland.
I wouldn’t call them Auckland City, but they are definitely in the Auckland Region.
I guess it might be a bit like saying Masterton is in Wellington. It’s technically true, it’s in the Wellington region, but you wouldn’t typically say Masterton, Wellington. However, you also wouldn’t normally say Masterton, North Island 😆.
Just watch it at home. Seriously. I don’t wanna smell your fish sandwich.
Name the cinema, you cowards.
Read the article
Is cinema 3 the actual name of the place?
Yep
Huh. I thought that just meant screen number three. What a generic name.

The family will probably just get a wet bus ticket across the back of the hand. Soft justice system
The family should get an apology and police should talk to the cinema about wasting police time.
If the cinema had an issue with the family eating their own food, kick them out this is not a criminal issue.
The family should get home D. If we’re going to get tough on crime then let’s get tough on crime.
We are here because being tough on crime doesn’t work. Setting fire to a flame is pointless, so why fight crime with unethical legality? Be firm with crime, not tough. Be understanding, not unrelenting.
They’re winding you up, and quite successfully.
This is the internet, you must always remember Poe’s law
Hello Hello?
Hi.
I think we should gas the whole cinema, we will ensure that the rot wont spread. These degenerates endangering corporate profits cannot be allowed to spread their hateful message and those who were near by have already been infected by the thought crime.
How can this country gain “business confidence” if the theatres cannot be confident that they can fob off 2x overpriced lollies and sugar water?
I would recommend that the cinema chain start selling some form of sweet flavored inhalant, lace it with nicotine to ensure that the poors will keep coming back for more.
Push the marketing to extreme levels showing “fun” and “exciting” people enjoying the new product, have seasonal flavors and “funky” colours.
Did you read the article? This is a story about a phycho cinema employee, the family seemed pretty reasonable.
The family broke rules and then refused to either get rid of the food or leave. Called an employee a slur too for good measure.
Read the herald article.
Yeah I’ve seen that now. I guess there always had to be more to the story.
I read OC as sarcasm. But Poe’s law ‘n’ all…
Hmm, my sarcasm detector may be a bit broken ever since sarcasm tags were invented.
