Like most car systems, they need to put up with the worst environmental conditions and work for years on end without issue. People talk a lot of shit about cars being less reliable now but stuff like this is expected to last 100,000 miles and still work despite zero maintenance and being subject to awful conditions.
They need to handle snow, sleet, salt, surges of water, high heat, direct sunlight for hours on end, road debris, various chemicals and oils that may be splashed on them, various cleaning chemicals, intense and constant vibrations, and basically anything else that’s gonna be thrown at them. And everything needs to work. The camera quality is often effected by all the multiple layers of protection in front of the camera, as well as all the sensor tech that is also built in.
All of this also needs to be done as cheap as possible, these cameras are still pretty pricey but considering everything that’s going on, it’s not bad at all. Getting the camera quality any higher despite everything working against it would add considerable cost and little benefit, as no one is gonna pick a more expensive car solely because it has a nicer camera
It’s a lot easier when all of the domestic automakers are state owned and there is no political opposition to anything. Also the fact they are fully industrializing and building up many cities due to their economic boom, it’s reasonable they’d made all née infrastructure modernized and future proof. Much easier than having to replace old infrastructure and build new ones on top of them
