  • Do people using the older init functions actually perform even better?

The thing is, the really older init functions like Sysvinit or even Upstart aren’t all that’s being compared to Systemd. Alternatives include OpenRC, which is just a bit older than systemd and also improved during this time, and Dinit, which is newer than systemd.

I recently switched from Arch to Artix witg Dinit, I can’t make a full comparison since I also didn’t reinstall every program after the change and this might play into it, but I can at least say that the time it takes to boot is reduced, and I saw some people online making the same constatation.

As for the comparision with windows… I think regardless of init system and distros it is generally true that Linux does more out of less than windows, and that difference completely dwarfs the difference between specific init systems on Linux.

  • It’s not like “bug” is a scientific word or has a universally accepted definition. The narrowest (and possibly the original) definition is just hemiptera, an order of insects. It being more broadly synonymous with “insect”, is pretty common; so is the broader definition including all land arthropods. But an even broader definition including all land invertebrates isn’t unheard of.

That was “libertarian” or “libertaire”. “Liberal” was already a bourgeois ideology at the time of the 1789 French revolution. It was a more egalitarian idea than the pre-existing status quo, since it involved abolishing feudalism and noble privileges, but it also came with a defense to the right of property and free market. I think the difference between the USian use of the word and the use in most if the rest of the world is that Americans kept the quotation of novelty and progressism that were attached to the word at the time of it’s independence, rather than the specific type of economic policies it was associated to.

  • I haven’t posted or commented on Reddit since over a month, but I haven’t deleted my account yet. I have consulted Reddit a few times since, notably when it showed up in the results for a question I was looking up, or to see the posts from the r/Askhistorians weekly roundup (of which I follow the RSS feed). While the way I’ve been using Reddit lately doesn’t require an account, I’m unsure of whether I intend to delete mine; partly because if for whatever reason, I needed to post a question somewherebit will get a big audience, that’s the biggest I can currently get, and partly because I don’t want all my great posts and comments of the past to be lost to history…
