You can jump up from 5 to 7, even more depending on the snacks.
I like plants, invertebrates and aquariums.

I like ants. I paid 0.30€ per tube and I don’t think I’ll ever need to buy more, I use old plastic food containers, so free, I breed my ants’ feeder insects…
I mean, there are many hobbies that can be dirt cheap or free. Do you like plants? Get free cuttings asking for them to your neighbor or any acquaintance, buy a little dirt and cheap pots. Do you like fishes or crustaceans? You don’t need an expensive aquarium, you just need a really cheap food grade plastic tub. Do you like bikes? My bike is a cheap second hand one. Do you need a house? Forget it, you’ll never be able to pay for one.
Well, of course they are fish, so do we, but they are also dinosaurs.

I mean… We are still living among dinosaurs. What do you think birds are? Government drones?

There’s also AntsCanada, less on the diy and more on the craziness an ant keeper can reach lol
Spider wort is in the Tradescantia genus, right? I’m learning you have to keep them alone for them to thrive (I almost killed my T. zebrina and have an overgrown T. pallida). Seriously, you can even forget a cutting in the sun without water or anything and after days it will be like nothing happened.
Sometimes I wish I had friends nearby to give plants to.
I send you a /hug and good luck searching for joy!

My special interests right now are plants, fishes and ants. In the northern hemisphere is a good time to find some queen ants, making diy homes for them is rewarding, cheap and it won’t take a lot of space (at least for some time, until the colonies grow). Plants are great because a lot of people have them, so you can ask for cuttings and tips, and there are also studies about the benefits of having plants in your environment. Almost the same with the fishies.
If you find something interesting, even a little, try it. There’s always time to leave it if finally that’s not your thing.

A gazillion dependencies and zero optimization, eating up cpu, spying on us, advertisements…
And if you try and use an alternative browser you know many websites won’t work.
Who use dermestid beetles as clean up crew? The usual beetle for that matter is Alphitobius diaperinus (or any tenebrionid), maybe dermestid beetles don’t eat oothecas?
I have several tenebrionids, A. diaperinus are in my dubia roach bin because those roaches keep the ootheca inside, but I can’t put any tenebrionid with my red runners because they lay the ootheca and the larvae could eat that.
Cam@scribe.disroot.orgto Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Amsterdam to install steps to help cats escape from the canalsEnglish46·20 days agoSo… 100000€ because 19 cats, that shouldn’t be there, drowned. Domestic cats are extinction agents, cat colonies need to disappear (not by drowning the cats, ideally in my mind they should go to a really big building just for them, I am a silly dreamer) and if the cats aren’t feral, they should fine owners that let them roam outside. It’s bad for the ecosystem, dangerous for the cat and even for their humans (zoonosis).
That money would be better spent taking cats off the street.
I don’t find this uplifting at all.

I know it can be difficult, specially depending on where you live. I live in what could be considered a privileged country regarding access to food, specially fresh produce an vegan options; since what now are called walkable cities are the common thing in Europe distance is no issue either.
If you can, and I know is a big “if” (price and availability where you live), I would recommend you to try and add textured soy protein to your diet. It’s dry, so it’s light and you can store it for a long time, and it’s really versatile and easy to use.
Your situation is what it is because the system is what it is and individually we can do practically nothing to change it, you do what you can do and you shouldn’t feel bad for not being able to do more. First you have to take care of yourself. /hug
Yes, it counts to the point there are vegans not eating figs because of the insect pollinator dies inside the fruit. I eat figs because that’s just the natural life cycle for that species.
From time to time I see a debate about animals like clams, which have no central nervous system and therefore lack the capability to suffer. Usually the approach to this is “if it tries to hide/run from me, I won’t eat it” and a little less “I won’t eat them because of the ecological impact”.
You’re actually more savvy and skilled than most sysadmins I’ve met irl.
