10 months agoYour mechanic is correct. These are called integrated housing thermostats. Even with the housing and thermostat all in one they still aren’t that expensive though. $25 or so.
When the engine isn’t running all the oil is just sitting there pooled in metal pockets in the head, the lifters, the oil pan, oil filter, etc. When you start the engine oil starts flowing, spraying everywhere inside the engine and applying pressure to the seals. It’s common for leaks to only happy while the seals are under pressure.
