Was told that the thermostat was not serviceable on my 1999 Silverado 1500 5.3L . Mechanic said I’d have to replace the thermostat and the housing as a assembly. I’ve never heard of this being a thing before

Your mechanic is correct. These are called integrated housing thermostats. Even with the housing and thermostat all in one they still aren’t that expensive though. $25 or so.
How can I tell what coolant I have?. It looks green but I’m not sure its supposed to be. 99 Silverado
