Rant@lemmy.sdf.org•It is fucking WILD to me that an instance ban on a completely other instance can result in post removals in other instancesEnglish
221·3 days agoWhen a spammer posts many times in different communities on multiple instances it’s much much less work for everyone if the admin on their home instance nukes their account and all their posts and have that automatically propogate to all instances.
The alternative would involve admins/mods on every instance that received spam having to remove their copies. On many smaller instances that just wouldn’t happen and their copies of the spam would be left online forever. That would make the fedi extremely attractive to spammers and even more would turn up. We’d effectively have turned the fedi into a spam amplification botnet.

Programming@programming.dev•Linux Kernel TCP Flaw With 9.8 CVSS Score Affects Ubuntu, Red Hat and Other DistributionsEnglish
38·9 days agoYou can disable multipath TCP by issuing this command
sudo sysctl -w net.mptcp.enabled=0persist across reboots with
echo "net.mptcp.enabled=0" | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/99-mptcp.conf
If your kernel is older than 5.6 then there is no multipath TCP to disable. e.g. Ubuntu 20.04 should be fine.

1·1 month agohaha yes that’s what I expected :)
I know someone who absolutely loves AutoKey and will switch DEs to anything still using X11, just for this app. If I can save them the disruption that’d be nice.

7·1 month agoPretty interesting LLM policy they’ve adopted.
https://github.com/rust-lang/rust-forge/blob/main/src/policies/llm-usage.md
It’s fine to use LLMs to answer questions, analyze, distill, refine, check, suggest, review. But not to create.

3·1 month agoYep no way in hell is the smallest minor coalition partner going to get to redesign the tax system, lol
Even if the bigger party in the coalition is Labour instead of National. Tax is just too fundamental - minor parties get a few crumbs, the main party gets the core stuff - finance, health, education.
Still I love how TOP has put UBI on the map, it gives Luxon the willies and makes him behave irrationally which is a win.

71·1 month agothe same old trickle down
No, TOP is offering universal basic income. https://www.opportunity.org.nz/tax-reset
That’s revolutionary. That is why National cannot work with them.
According to the tax reset calculator on that page, my household would be $22k better off each year. That’s substantial. Give it a try.

They are using multiple accounts to try to mask it. I’m not sure but it seems like about 4 to 6 different accounts all run by the same guy.
It is a deluge. It is deceptive. No one opted in to it.

Attempts to have your cake and eat it too are always going to be pretty fraught when it’s a moral / ethical issue. If you try to compromise then no one is happy except the opportunists who see it as a chance to push for further changes in their direction.
Several weeks ago, a KDE developer started a mailing list thread asking about how we should handle the flood of AI slop merge requests. Everyone agreed it was a problem, and that we don’t want that crap.
That bit of context was certainly left out of the story when I first heard it and had I known that I would have read the proposed policy more charitably.
As an aside - this is the problem with having mailing lists and chatrooms - they are not on the web so it’s impossible to link to the original source / context and this provides an opening for people who want to stir up some shit. I use Matrix a lot less these days, for that reason.
