Astronomy@mander.xyz•Aliens Probably Exist - But They’re Staying Silent For a ReasonEnglish
01·3 days agoPopulation growth compounds, though. Once you’ve colonized a million worlds, the next million would come in a fraction of the time of the first million, and the next 2 million in less time than that, then 4 million in the same time as before, etc. Like grains of rice on a chessboard. Totally feasible to fill a galaxy if FTL travel is achieved.
More likely - FTL is impossible so each species is stuck in their own solar system.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Recomendations please for a self-hosted contact form on VPS (RESOLVED)English
8·4 days agoI’m a flask developer but even so I would use PHP for this. There are a million php-based contact form scripts on the web and configuring caddy to use PHP will be easier than python/flask.
As for the sending email part - don’t run a smtp server locally, too much hassle. Smtp2go has a free tier which will be fine.

Rust@programming.dev•Loki - An All-in-One, Batteries Included LLM CLIEnglish
2·4 days agoOh ok, so if Lemmy implimented MCP you’d be able to ask Loki “hey what’s the main themes people are discussing in !news@lemmy.world at the moment?” and the MCP is what gives Loki enough smarts to know which Lemmy API calls to make to get the posts?

Global News@lemmy.zip•US judge drops criminal charges against Boeing over 737 MAX 8 crashesEnglish
34·6 days agoFor context, wikipedia says that
In 2021, Boeing recorded $62.3 billion in sales.
If Boeing can’t be held accountable because they also make weapons then perhaps the civilian aircraft manufacturing part of the business needs to be split off into a separate one.
Seems like OP just copy and pasted some perplexity.ai output.

Global News@lemmy.zip•Tens of thousands shelter as typhoon slams into PhilippinesEnglish
3·9 days ago150 kph is not crazy fast in normal situations but in Philippines half the houses are basically shacks made from thin bits of wood and a few sheets of corrugated iron. So they don’t have a lot of staying power.
Combine that with the path of the storm going straight to Cebu City, where 5 million people live.
They’ll get through this but it’s not great.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•I am curious about hosting my own lemmy/mastodon serverEnglish
31·9 days agoIMO Lemmy/PieFed is safer to run because the community mods will delete anything illegal, which will delete it for you, too. About 5 instances host 95% of communities worth joining so it’s easy for us to coordinate defense.
Mastodon is thousands of instances and more wild west. Bad stuff can come from anywhere.

Very interesting, thanks.
Good idea, I’ll add something similar to PieFed.

News@lemmy.world•Bill Gates softens ‘Climate Disaster’ approach, says strategy needs to shift: InterviewEnglish
431·15 days agoAlthough Gates said investment to battle climate change must continue, he argued that US President Donald Trump’s cuts to USAID threaten a more urgent problem
https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/577152/bill-gates-makes-a-stunning-claim-about-climate-change
He’s not wrong. Trump’s cuts to USAID will cause the death of millions in quite a short time.

I really noticed that problem on Spotify. Lots of 2 minute tracks/songs that are just one musical idea with no development or iteration of it and really limited recommendations.
Tidal was much better.
