All environmentalists in the global North have operated from the same strategic assumption: the more the climate crisis hits us, the more climate rational we’ll become. But the last few years have falsified that hypothesis. In fact, the more the climate catastrophe escalates, the less we want to look at it.

    I say go back to actual print pamphleteering. The internet is so heavily censored and loud with distractions good luck ever getting your message across. Plus entrenched interests will bribe lobby the government and facebook and X to drop or censor you. Payment processors will say they’re concerned about supporting radicalism and now you don’t have a funding method besides crypto…

    The system is going to suck up surplus energy in all it’s forms (energy, attention, bureaucratic capacity, political party policies) to protect itself and incumbent rent seekers. I really really think the only way to shake things up enough (going off of history) is a massive social revolution or a devastating war with a peer or near peer actor. Expediency kills off enough of the rent seekers or sidelines them that there’s a chance post war you can actually focus on doing something productive instead of making sure Count Richfuck jr. IV can have uninterrupted access to the peasant’s money.

    Met an otherwise intelligent person recently who, like the quote in the post, did not believe there was a “climate catastrophe.” It really is perplexing, but I guess some psychological mechanism only makes them double down or ignore all evidence to the contrary. The funny thing is that they said something like, “Humans will find a way.” At this point I had given up on the conversation and all I could think was, “Maybe so, but which ones?”

      What gets me is the older you are the more obvious it should be. When we have a “brutal” cold winter near me its like a typical winter from when I was a kid. Almost all summer precipitation now is storms and simple rainy days have vanished. Most rain when I was young was rainy days with little to no thunder of lightening. Storms were way less frequent. I really think there is a like the typical person only remembers things for like 5 years and like if you remember 10 your like one std dev above normal and 20 is like 2 and 40 is like 3.
