see, I keep seeing this in threads where I haven’t deleted posts. either David and Blake are very good at cleaning up spam before I even see it, or maybe another action is causing this? (folks deleting their own posts, their home instance purging their content, defederation?)

but also, fucking lemmy, was it just impossible cap the new post variable to 0 instead of letting it go negative?

huh, one more bug to keep track of! though I’m relieved we’re not falling victim to a silent wave of spam

I looked at this post and it showed for me as “53 (-7)” - and there’s a pile of “1 more reply” which don’t load. Were they comments that were deleted on their home instance so got disappeared here? (That’s just a spurious hypothesis, I haven’t gathered evidence at all.)

that’s what I’m wondering too! the “x more replies” thing that won’t load I usually associate with replies detaching from the thread, which could be due to other instances deleting replies or due to a bug. I need to click on one with the lemmy backend logs open soon and see what error it throws. if this is due to other instances deleting replies then it’s a broken feature, because any replies to those replies will be inaccessible on our end

I’ll look into this — it’s a pretty useful feature on mastodon and it feels like table stakes as far as features go

something I noticed: viewing posts on iOS in safari doesn’t seem to work (does in Fx)

particulars: 14 Pro, 16.6, 1Blocker (all base lists + VPN trackerblocker mode enabled), safari incognito

interesting, mine is working (with a different blocker and no incognito) but I’ll make a note to try a configuration closer to yours and see what happens

Does the “Next” button at the end of the page of comments work for anyone?

It doesn’t work for me. I’ve tried the “darkly” theme as well as the browser default one, and no dice. I don’t know if it’s an issue with some sort of JS-blocking on my browser (Firefox on macOS), but all other interface buttons seem to work.

The button isn’t even “clickable” for me.

Not sure if it’s a site problem or a fedi problem but right now there’s a submission on the frontpage, titled

Will MacAskill on EA: “The demographics of who this appeals to … The levels of autism ten times the average. Lots of people on the spectrum.”

There’s a tiny shit-brown garbage pail icon next to it, denoting that it’s been deleted by the author. But there are still active links, so if you don’t notice that icon, you’ll hit the comment link (speech bubble) and get a page saying the submisson cannot be found:

    https://awful.systems/post/323847?scrollToComments=true

Ideally, if a submission is removed, links to associated pages, like comments, should be deactivated. Maybe the presentation of the submission should be altered too (strikethrough, greyed out) to make it clearer that this is a removed submission.

Interestingly, the link to ExTwitter is still active, so if the submitter decided that this was a bad submission it’s still clear what they linked to and what they considered was the meaning of the link…

Posted in the account requests (I just approved it):

HELP: I enabled two-factor authentication on my other account, sneak, and when I logged out, the TOTP doesn’t work. The site didn’t give me seed words to log back in case this failed, and now I’m locked out of my account. Can you assist?

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3325 holy fuck that’s bad, lemmy generates TOTP links that don’t work with most authenticators and doesn’t verify with an initial 2fa code before enabling it

@sneak2@awful.systems, you may be able to unlock your original account if you do the “forgot my password” flow, which apparently lets you disable 2fa (which also feels pretty insecure). that’ll require your account to have an email associated with it though. otherwise as soon as I’m at my computer I’ll run the query in that github issue to disable 2fa on your account and ping you when it’s fixed.

    • getting to the moderation tools is godawful; you click on the vertical ellipsis menu next to a post and then the mod tools jank into view behind the menu that pops up
    • @dgerard@awful.systems tells me jerboa is broken because awful.systems isn’t giving it a valid version
    • mlem is somehow even worse than jerboa: it just says “Couldn’t fetch your account’s information. File a bug report.” after logging in

I’m getting 400 Bad Request response from awful.systems/api/v3/post when I try to publish a post in MoreWrite. Seems to be a CORS issue(?)

I’m dialling in from a starbucks wifi with a vpn - does that matter?

Never mind. I restarted my VPN connection and it worked… magic

I guess that’s because my vpn ip was different from my auth ip
