Hello,
I just went to oilchangers, yes that’s the actual name of the establishment
They forgot to tell me that I need my car off during the oil change… I drive a 2020 Prius.
They said it was fine as long as it wasn’t spitting oil back out and the car is a hybrid system.
Am I being lied to? This is my first time getting one on my own
I think they would say something if the gas engine was running. If it was, then it hurt the engine.
Provided the engine wasn’t running at all during the oil change you’ll be fine.
Hybrids generally don’t run the engine when they are stopped, unless the hybrid battery gets too low. It’s very possible that the engine didn’t run during the oil change even though the car was on.
100% this. Tech would have noticed if the car was on. Unless he or she was completely incompetent
If the actual engine was running then yes, it could have definitely damaged the engine in the amount of time it took to drain and fill.
Since it’s a hybrid though, the engine could have been off while it was on battery power.
You own the car, can you tell when it’s engine is running vs when it’s operating on battery power? If so, was the engine running?
It’s actually easy to forget thenToyota Hybrid system is running. I’ve walked away from my hybrid and the only way I’ve known it was left on was the car will beep of the key fob is too far away.
Unless you look at the instrument cluster is easy to forget the car is on If the engine doesn’t run
By default Toyota doesn’t turn the car off for 1 hour of left idling
You’re fine if the engine didn’t run during the oil change.
Also, you’d be WAY better off doing your own oil change in the driveway than going to a quick-lube place. It’ll cost the same or maybe a few bucks more, but you’ll know what oil and filters are being used and you’ll know it’s being done right.
show me the technican who would fill oil in a running engine after he drained it?
Well that’s the point the engine didn’t run. However, since the hybrid system was left in the potential for the engine to run was real.
but still not to bad, since this car had oil in it. It takes a few hours stand still to fully drain. And there is always something left in the oil filter.
Yes the pressure is non existant, but, for this short duration. I dont think any bad happened at all. If you built up an engine, you turn it by hand, almost dry. So I would just calm.
Way cheaper to do it yourself but it requires the tools knowledge and space that 95% of people don’t have
A few dollars worth of tools from Harbor Freight and a level surface on which to park the car. That isn’t too much for most people. Granted, many people don’t have a driveway, but space could likely be found. We used to do it in the mall parking lot and brought the used oil to Autozone to be recycled.
It’s a viable option for many people who don’t know it, and my goal is to make them aware. YouTube has dozens of videos teaching how to do it, people just need to know it’s possible.
You don’t need wait for them to tell you to turn the car off during an oil change, it should be common sense
I am a manager somewhere similar to oil changers, please stop turning your car off whenever you feel like it. Also please stop turning your car on whenever you feel like it.🤦🏼♂️
I wouldn’t know. I don’t trust those jiffy lube types of places after they locked up my 5VZ Tacoma and tried to give me $500 to call it even.
Ouch…
Youre not wrong but any time Ive been to a pull through oil change they have asked me at specific times to turn the engine on and off.
In my experience, the standard procedure is to tell you to turn it off and put your keys on the dashboard.
lol I think take the key out of the cabin would be more appropriate these days
Probably fine, but I’d not be returning to that business. Absolutely no reason to chance something like that.
I think if it were a real problem, they might have been yelling at you to shut it down. Also, your car might be yelling at you on the dashboard due to low oil pressure, etc. Lastly, your engine might mechanically yell at you, which is the worst of the 3
Wtf…
Why would you be the one to shut it off don’t you hand over they keys and let them go do the pool change? And if they could hear it on why didn’t they shut it off?
There are numerous quick oil change places where you pull your car into the service bay and remain in your car while they drain and fill the oil.
Oh ok interesting never seen one where I live.
As others have said, the engine was probably not running.
By probably I mean I’d be almost certain that it wasn’t. Unless they were absolutely incompetent, the person who is under the car putting a wrench on the drain plug would absolutely notice (I used to work at one of these shops down in the pit)
Just make sure you are always turning it off.
Do you turn off your car while you pumping the gas?
Are you trying to claim damages? Go to r/legaladvice
Its fine.
Not nice but fine.
It wasnt dust dry. Luck in bad lucki would never / have never trusted a quick lube place. learn to do your own oil changes, very basic task, have some piece of mind.
