    Nope. Plates stay with the car for it’s entire lifetime. Cars are registered by the importer/manufacturer and stay registered until the car is scrapped or exported.

    A possible workaround is that Tesla transfers the cars to the buyers without plates, and the buyers then orders a plates, waits for it to arrive, and then goes to Tesla to mount the plate and pick up the car. This adds inconvinience to the buyer however, all because the silly reason that Tesla refuses to talk to the union.

      Do European plates need to be mounted by the manufacturer/seller?

      In the US we get plates mailed to us all the time, and we install them ourselves.

        Countries have different systems.

        In Sweden specifically, it is illegal to drive without plates so they need to be mounted before you can drive away from the dealer. The plates are sent to the first owner to register the car, usually the importer or the dealer. You can order replacement plates in case the original ones are stolen or damaged, but that is not some thing you would normally have to do.
