Thinking about getting a EV. Just curious why you got yours. The reasons I can think of are:
- Environmentally friendly 🌵
- Cheaper Fuel ⚡️
- They are cool/trendy 😎
- Lower maintenance 🔧
Is there anything surprising that you found out after you bought it?

I don’t get the last point.
Then you must not live in Minnesota
2 and 3 are not really unique to evs, and 3 is actually worse with evs
2 - Cabin preconditioning is unique to EVs because otherwise you need to run the engine. You often can’t even do that if you’re in a garage.
3 - You don’t generally need to go to any charging station in an EV. You plug it in at home and wake up to a full tank every morning.
2 - i can precondition my ice volvo with an app when it’s in a garage or a parking lot or anywhere else
3 - unless you’re driving farther than 100 miles or so. which people do do.
I hope you mean a parking garage for #2, and not your own garage
you realize you can heat and cool a car without running the engine, right?
How do you cool an ICE car without running the engine? Does your Volvo turn an AC compressor with a standalone electric motor?
yes
Ah, so you have the Volvo plug in hybrid EV? Looks like Volvo says the cooling lasts for 2-3 minutes. Not only is this a hybrid EV, but 2-3 minutes of operation? Come on dude.

If you have a full on ICE car and think you can do preconditioning, you don’t know how AC works.
Which EV do you road trip in? I have an EV and a ICE car and I find that road tripping in them is comparable. Maybe your EV charges slower?
just last week we went on a 500-mile road trip to the mountains and spent a grand total of 3 minutes tending to the needs of the car with zero worries about when and whether we were gonna get anywhere. it cost us probably $100 more than taking the ev, which in my mind is money well spent to have that piece of mind.
while driving up a mountain road, we saw an i4 getting winched up onto a flatbed tow truck.
So which EV do you have?
Don’t precondition your ICE in your garage, but do if it’s an EV. And most of us charge at home so #3 holds.
2 without carbon monoxide is unique to EVs
Is cabin preconditioning different from just using remote start to heat your ICE car?
I was really close to leasing a polestar 2 this week but couldn’t convince myself to make the leap from my current car to EV. No ability to home charge, mostly drive on road trips
The main difference is there is no carbon monoxide concern. No need to vent the garage which matters to me living in a it city with break-ins. I also tend to just keep the cabin conditioning running if I am running quick errands so the car never even gets cold. I feel like people look at you funny if you always keep your ICE idling.
No home charging + frequent road trips is definitely a good reason not to go with an EV though.
