The “best” google phone has never been the best google phone. Their flagship tier has always been sub-par. Their budget tier on the other hand tends to be pretty good. The a series has traditionally offered one generation old tech and a great camera for a good price. There is no 8a, but the base 8 is already down to $550 so it seems to be taking that role. They do well in the mid-range.
If you want a top of the line flagship phone buy an iPhone. No one is competing with Apple right now on that front.
