Hey can you guys help me? We just stalled after exiting the free way and we pushed it into a lot. The car was running fine all day, drove it about 80 miles there and 80 miles, and after we exited the freeway and brakes at a red light the engine stalled and shut off. Turned the engine back on and it was idling but putting it into reverse made it stall again. What’s wrong with my car?

I agree with the advice from others that a torque converter could be the issue but if it were my car I would take a hard look at main wiring harness moving when the car is put in gear. Engine assemblies move to one side when a car is put in drive or reverse and they usually move opposite ways depending on the gear. I would start the car in park with brake on (be safe) and with it idling do a basic and methodical “wiggle test” where you start at a point in the engine bay and give each harness and connection a “wiggle” to see if you can replicate the stalling. It could be as simple as an air intake hose has come loose but I doubt it.
Transmission issue, I’d get it towed and I would look up Nissan’s transmission warranties as they extended it to something but I’m not sure on your model and year, it idles fine and revs fine so that means your engine should be good, it only stalls when put into gear and obviously only factor being added is the transmission so that’d be my first guess, and might be the torque converter or possibly internal as it is a CVT and Nissan.
Need more info… what kind of car? Can you post a video of the start/stall thing? Does it start each time then die right away?

Check your alternator is charging and you have battery voltage at starter and check for over charging shouldn’t be more than roughly 14.5V I believe . Check battery voltage. Check all ground connections on engine and frame etc. check wiring, check ecm pins, check starter connections, scan and get codes or take to shop and get a scan done and printed then post it. Probably best as the first step actually. Googling the codes may show related faults and may help narrowing down the code to chase

Hello, this is most likely related to a problem with the transmission torque converter causing the engine to stall. The reverse gear runs at a higher line pressure and when a converter is worn, it can make the engine stall in reverse. Make sure it is full of transmission fluid, check for codes. If that all checks ok, have a transmission shop double check the issue before making repairs.
If you are lucky this is the torque converter. If this is a Nissan with the CVT transmission then it is also possible that the transmission is screwed up in which case it will be a very expensive fix. Nissan is known to have really fucked up CVT transmissions that don’t last for shit.
