(As someone who spends a lot of time in China and originally from there)
In China it’s a bit different. MOST Chinese cities have excellent public transport and all coastal and even inland cities that are third tier are serviced by high speed rail or regional trains that make Acela in the US look like a steam train.
Having a car is optional but a nice convenience. Like my cousin says often - if she forgets to charge her EV then she’ll hop on the subway 2 blocks away. In the US outside of NYC Boston and maybe Chicago not having a car means you aren’t getting anywhere realistically as the next bus is coming in an hour if it’s even available.
Uhm, steam trains were far more serviceable than what we have today…
