“You cannot import a vehicle built and certified to meet the vehicle standards of a foreign country because the Motor Vehicle Safety Act doesn’t allow you to modify such a vehicle to meet Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.”
Wait till he hears about the chicken tax
Yes, it’s super stupid and a great exemple of wasted federal tax money.
We could simply accept both UNECE WP.29 Standards and the US FMVSS and be done with it.
Even japan not being in the EU they adopted the EU car standard. But nooooooooooo the CMVSS is already a 98% copy paste of the US FMVSS but they moved a couple numbers around to justify their salaries.
Yet it took them like 15 years to put a regulation in place to prohibit cars from having light up clusters with their lights are off as it cause soo many NPC to drive around with their lights off at night, mostly hyundais.
Most countries that aren’t part of the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations still accept UN ECE vehicles. The only ones that don’t are the US and Canada.
I am hopeful that CETA kills CMVSS and eventually FMVSS too (since the US auto industry has big ties to Canada).
It would instantly solve our lack of small affordable car problem too.
The government is run by shitbags. Shocking
It only applies for 15 years and then you can do whatever you want (but still need to comply with rules like having Canada-legal tires and glass)
My last shop got shit on because we failed a RHD RX-7 for not having a Neutral safety switch on the Clutch Pedal on a freshly imported car. It says it right in the book, and does not have any exemptions. I did some googling and there are a handful of kits out there.
As for the Windows, its almost impossible to get Canada legal windows on cars that were never sold here (skyline) but you can buy a sticker to trick shops. There is no way to test the window so if we see the sticker during an inspection, thats good enough.
What’s a canada legal window sticker ? Cause I guarantee you most auto glass shops install some pretty jobber chinese glass that have never seen any sort of certifications if you ask me.
Cry me a river
You can hire services to make it happen. Depending on car, it can cost tens of thousands of dollars, but they make it happen.
How would they make it happen? Could be worth it in some cases. Sounds like it would be a whole black market operation
Unless it’s a new car or its older than 15 years
What exactly is “wild” aboot this? All that says is “cars must be built to comply with Canadian laws” which is aboot as normal and boring as laws get. This is literally the opposite of wild.
It also says you can’t bring a car in to have it modified to meet Canadian laws, which is a bit silly.
It’s ridiculous is what it is… I can’t bring a car into Canada that doesn’t meet Canadian safety laws and modify it to fit said laws and to be no different than other legal cars in terms of safety standards.
Welcome to earth, try the tacos.
