Yup. The Royal Marines that are developing the idea, and the company’s founder is a former Royal Marines reservist. But the Glock attachment is a US Nazy Joint Prototyping and Experimentation Maritime development. It seems like everyone is looking at this as a great tool for ship to ship interdiction and boarding.

Rather than having to use a slow rigid inflatable boat and climb into the ship with a rope ladder, or transfer with a helicopter that can only effectively drop all your troops in one location, you use these to individually drop your troops off in precise locations around the ship.

        Basically this but with jetpacks.

10 minutes of flight time, firing without cover on the battlefield, tanks of fuel mounted on your back on the battlefield. Seems like a brilliant plan in search of a disaster.

If you read the article you would know that ship to ship interdiction is the planned use scenario. Fly from one ship to another that your boarding and the troops drop off and transition to using a rifle and go about ship clearing in the traditional manner. In doing so the troops will be airborne for 2-3 mins max with the only danger being that your vulnerable approaching the ship and on landing. This brief period is where the tracking auto pistol comes in.

To me these jetpacks are no more vulnerable that traditional ship to ship transitions. You can still be shot the fuck up when approaching the ship in a RIB to board the ship via a rope ladder or rappelling from a helicopter. The disadvantage of using both those methods is you’re dropping those troops off or having them board in a single location, unless you use another helicopters or RIB’s but even then your only increasing your insertion points by one.

Using jetpacks you can have all your troops land simultaneously anywhere on the ship.

Honestly this would only make sense if the pistol was pointed at the user in case of capture.

If you ever shot at a threat with this you better have wanted to cosplay a clay pigeon at some point in your life.

Let’s assume cost isn’t an issue and there’s some advanced computer onboard for quick aiming… you have 30 shots (maybe)?

Your hands should not act as thrusters if the goal is to do anything except fly. They would be 100x better designing some leg mount system with a frame/protective shielding from the thrusters.

This is assuming there’s any practicality in having a person involved instead of just using a drone (which there is not at this time).

    Burglars: “looks like nobody’s home”

Me hovering 25 feet above them: starts playing Iron Man on my jetpack loudspeakers

    Burglars: “what the fuck?”

They shoot me as I wildly spin my head around trying to aim my gun. Dying, I plummet to the ground and start flying around the neighbourhood uncontrollably like a released balloon full of gas. My lifeless corpse shoots passersby indiscriminately. Iron Man is still playing

The intent for this is doing the same tasks as troops dropped from a helo, is a helo more or less vulnerable to that stinger?
