So, I need new winter tyres.

Dealer asked me if I wanted to go with runflats, and actually suggested runflats for my F10… but on the internet, everyone is bashing them left and right.

From my understanding, they are a bit less comfortable than non-runflats, but that’s about it?

If it makes any difference, tyres in question are Uniroyal 245/40/R19.

Planned summer tyres are Pirelli PZero PZ4 LS.

    I don’t run them. The tread also burns off in about 3/4 miles compared to regular tires. I pack a tire repair kit though since my Beemer doesn’t have a spare

    Nay. They’re expensive, they wear faster, they’re noisier, they ruin the ride and handle, and it limits your options. Down side you’ll have to get towed vs driving into a service centre in the event of a flat.

    I’ve had runflats on a few cars.

    Our last car (G31 540i) had them. Ride was quite firm, not terrible, but would have been far better on regular tyres. Hitting small unseen potholes or joints in the road sounded awful - there was just no flex in the sidewalls at all. Actually cracked a rim on a pothole the week before we traded it in.

    Current car doesn’t have runflats and is a million times better. It feels far less skittish over bumps (granted it’s an M5 vs a 540i but you can feel the difference the tyres make) and I don’t wince every time I see a bump in the road. I’ll avoid runflats like the plague in future.

    Depends what is important to you - if you do a lot of remote driving and are worried about getting stranded they might be worth a gamble. If you enjoy comfort or spirited driving, I’d give them a swerve.

    First, in most cases, it’s technically not “runflat” anymore but rather run-on-flat, which is a standard Mercedes Benz came up with to try to strike a better balance between comfort and run flat capability. It can only do 50 miles at 50 mph I think whereas true run flats were able to do more.

    In my experience there’s still a lot of stigma around true run flats from years ago, which truly were horrible. But these days, the suspensions are better and the run-on-flats are much softer. A lot of the folks that knee-jerk respond and tell you to ditch run flats may not have ridden on the latest generation of cars or run-on-flats.

    My personal take is that for the higher profile tires (like yours) where sidewall is decently chunky, the difference is not that big. This is based on personal experience with my own swap. However on lower profile tires, the difference is more noticeable. This is based on two swaps I did on a 5 series. I swapped my 20s from ROF to regular, and I did the same on 18s (I’m kinda obsessed). With the 20s the difference was huge. With the 18s, I couldn’t really notice a difference in comfort between ROF and regular b

    Depends on if how the car handles is important to you. If it is, don’t get run-flats.

      OP I’ve changed my mind - you should actually find the most expensive run-flats you can find and buy 6 of them.

      Keep two in your backseat at all times, because that’s what rich people do.

    When I had runflats last year, potholes irreparably destroyed four tires (sidewall tears, very common with runflats), bent on of my wheels (because the runflats don’t absorb the impact, your wheel does instead), and cracked another wheel (same reason as the bent one, waited a month for a new wheel). $3,000 in damage. I’ve hit plenty of potholes with my current non-runflats and have had zero issues, no downsides, nothing I miss about the runflats, nothing. If you need the peace of mind enjoy wasting money to get it go for it. A tow in the unlikely event a non-runflat goes flat would probably be cheaper than the hundreds more the runflats cost.

    They saved my butt once. I had a doctor appointment I couldn’t miss or reschedule due to treatment. Ended up getting a flat on my way there but the run flats got me there on time so I could deal with it after the appointment.

    E89 here, ride ws massively improved by ditching them.

    Dealer wants to sell you run flats because they’re more expensive.
