So I bought a 2018 xDrive 3.5i today with only 32700 miles on it. Dealer tried to sell me the extended warranty at $5.5K and came down eventually to $3.9K.

It adds about $75 to my monthly installment. So wondering whether I should get it or not. The low mileage makes me think I shouldn’t but it is a 5.year old car already.

Thoughts or advice appreciated!

True but they play the game of probability with a large sample size whereas my sample size is 1.

It’s basically an insurance policy in the end innit? You could have major issues and it would be covered or you could drive accident free for 3 years and the money would be ‘wasted’. That’s how I’m seeing it right now, a $1300 per year insurance policy for the car.

I think with any modern car given the complexity you want some kind of warranty unless you’re setting money aside for repairs.

I’ve heard bad things about third party warranties but the one offered by my credit union beat the dealer on paper hands down. Full coverage to 100k miles/7 years from purchase date, electronics included, way cheaper than BMW, no deductible, and added to the end of the loan instead of increasing the loan principal. Might be worth looking at if something like that is available to you.

That said I bought at ~40k and am at 75k with no issues yet so I can’t speak to the claim process.

depends on what it DOESN’T cover… in any case, for that engine/age/mileage, I personally wouldn’t bother, it should be pretty reliable/safe as is.

Unless of course its got signs of being abused by some wannabe racer… in which case though I’d just plain walk away period.

Thanks to everyone who replied, much appreciated. The dealer warranty is 3 years 36K miles so the usual. I’m taking it to my regular mechanic and will get his advice as well.

IMO you may not get the money back but it’s good for the peace of mind. That said, read the conditions closely first
