Hi everyone, this is my first time owning a car. It’s a 2020 Honda civic. I had the « service » light turn on so I took it in to my local Honda service center. These are the issues they flagged and the estimated cost for each. Are these prices fair? Or are these things I can easily/safely learn to do on my own? (Ignore the wiper insert replacement, I can definitely do that on my own)

Thank you in advance!

Good way to save money is just always youtube whatever service is recommended. Seems within your skills? Go for it. Sound hard? Let the professionals.

That said, engine air filter is a must and you should do yourself. 30 seconds, 15 bucks. Wiper blades, if needed. 5 minutes, 20-30 bucks. Cabin air filter, not critical and can somewhat be a pain depending on the car. But very DIY friendly usually. Brake fluid and CVT fluid: Read your owner’s manual and see the reccomened interval. If your car has it due, DO IT. If your fluid is good, you could pass temporarily on the Brake fluid. DO NOT PASS ON CVT FLUID. CVTs need very rigorous fluid changes, right on time. Dont delay that.

I second this. Why does my opinion matter? It doesn’t. I just be doing the same, it works for me, and I save money lol

Does CVT fluid draw moisture? My 2yo Encore has only 2550 miles already had one oil change(1100 miles) -its car for Wife to go to Dr in.

I second this. It’s a great time we live in with YouTube and the vast information you can find online for DIY stuff. I learned how to work on cars basically from YouTube. Now, I can do majority of my cars maintenance without having to pay $$$ for labor. 👌🏽

This is one of the key talking points of the CVTs currently. According to Subaru, your transmission has “lifetime” CVT fluid. The catch is that they expect the transmission to die at 100k miles- thats its lifetime.

A CVT that calls for fluid changes is FAR more likely to last much longer than any with life time fluid.

You know what, i was prepared for a negative ass anti-mechanic top comment and i was really to be pissed off about it. But then i read your comment, and you know what… you’re a breath of fresh air. You’re absolutely right in everything you said, and you didn’t take shots at the technician who’s just doing his job and trying to make a living like everybody else. Bravo good sir or madam!

I wouldn’t try to do the CVT Fluid yourself. The Dealership would know how to do it best. And if you do it, and fuck it up, you’re screwed. If the dealer does it, and they fuck it up, you get a new transmission.

On Hondas it’s super simple to do on the 1.5 L engine. If you can do a oil change you can do the cvt oil. Don’t pay someone 100 dollars more to do it when you can do it at the same time as a oil change.

I agree, if you’re capable of doing an oil change, the cvt fluid is just as easy to replace. That said, someone taking their car to the dealer, usually isn’t doing their own repairs. The cvt fluid price isn’t too crazy, but I would find a trusted local mechanic and have them do it. Make sure to use the proper fluid. i wouldn’t replace the wipers unless they aren’t working well. Everything else on that list needs to be done, but not necessarily at the dealer.

      Agree with all of this.

Owned multiple Honda’s. Filters are super easy. 20 minutes tops. And pennies on the dollar to just go to AutoZone or something like it for them.

And for the love of God, do the CVT stuff always. On time. Every time. Literally the weakest point of the car.
